Ask me anything about China.
proud of my 8yo for writing his first 春聯 this year!
aiming to post more here these days.
something that my social circle is talking a lot about recently is universities in macau 'banning' mainland chinese students who did not take the gaokao.

to understand this, you first need to understand the gaokao. simply put, it's a super competitive national college entrance exam taken by high school students that plays a critical role in determining their univ admissions and future career opportunities.
second, you need to understand that macau is still a SAR, like hong kong -- 2 systems, 1 country. so they still maintain a large degree of autonomy from mainland china, despite still being a part of it (i think reunification was ~20 yrs ago).

Hey, I will be visiting Shanghai in 2 days, and I was wondering what do you use to access the internet in China?
I heard most VPNs don't work reliably.
I will be working remotely so it's important I have stable access to the internet. Thanks!

congrats! Brian has married a wise and beautiful Chinese girl! She was a journalist at SCMP in Hong Kong and Reuters in Beijing. Her past articles on the politics and society of China and beyond are quite insightful.

BREAKING: Goldman Sachs Trading desk: Long China is the most crowded trade on Wall Street right now 突发新闻:高盛交易部门:做多中国是华尔街目前最拥挤的交易
1. Chinese real estate are down 20-50% across the nation
2. In major city, it is not uncommon for new couples to fund their down payment by "empty 4 pockets", taking out entire life saving of parents and parents in-laws, basically longing real estate with big leverage
3. So their net worth are basically down by 50-100%
Econ 101 on wealth effect: Your networth is down 50-100%, you don't want to spend.
Why consumption is fucked big time.

Wealthy nations have to privilege to say no to technology like nuclear power and self driving cars while the developing countries would just go ahead..

Inspired by @saxophone55.eth, I created a Dune query to understand the number of Chinese-speaking users.
Based on Saxophone's work, in addition to changing the statistical time zone, I used a rule that counts Chinese casts which must contain at least one Chinese character (\u4e00-\u9fff) and do not contain Japanese "hiragana" characters (ぁ-んー).
The final results show a sharp increase in the number of Chinese-speaking users and the number of casts around May 22nd. This is consistent with my expectations because on that day, Farcaster announced a financing round of 150M, which attracted a large influx of Chinese users. However, the number of Chinese-speaking users is quite small, with only around 2,000.
