Always test your loads.
When building a diode laser, you have to regulate the current pushing the diode. Give it too much juice, and your laser becomes a weak LED.
Using a test load, the laser builder can dial in the laser driver before hooking anything up, hopefully avoiding any overloads.
The one ohm resistor glued on top of the multi meter, and the string of diodes hanging off of it IS the test load.
