A curated space for NYC news – with a focus on transit & housing

Congestion pricing in Manhattan starts on January 5th!

Even if the revenue didn't go toward funding public transit, I think this would be a necessary disincentive for driving in one of the most dense areas in the world.

People don't like change, but they usually get over it. When London and Stockholm implemented congestion pricing two decades ago, public opinion was negative but changed relatively quickly :)

Did you know NYC doesn’t support Citibike with *any* public funds?

That’s why Lyft keeps raising prices, and a 30 minute e-bike ride costs over $15 (or $7.20 if you are a Lyft Pink member for $200/yr)

What if we treated our bikeshare program like public transit? How many more rides would people take if it cost no more than a $2.90 subway ride?

Written in 1993 but still very relevant read on how New York City has, for decades, bent over backwards to increase land values for wealthy developers. In turn, pushing out blue collar jobs and funding for mass public transit (and the people that depend on them)

Last week the NYC City Council approved (a slightly watered down version of) Eric Adams’ housing plan for the “City of Yes”

It’s the biggest effort to build housing in decades for the city, and should result in 80,000 more homes over the next 15 years

Here is a good explanation of some of the zoning changes
