Knee cushioning is essential when sitting Seiza. The object is to regain focus, balance and posture. Not necessarily to always push the limit.

When I reach my threshold in Seiza, I now always sit comfortably for some time after to allow "the nutrients of my practice" to sink in.
Seiza on a hard floor will drastically change your perspective on pain tolerance and what is possible.

Much like an ice plunge. Exercise caution.
Contrast is what makes life beautiful.
Now I'm prepared to sit plainly again while pushing toward half lotus.

For those, like me, with naturally poor posture, I highly recommend starting there before attempting seiza.

"Proper Sitting"

Proper sitting involves alignment of the plum line and is essential for healthspan.
If you have a lot of nervous tension, Seiza might be the easiest way to start meditating.

If you love Japanese culture and can't sit without checking your phone for 5 minutes, learn Seiza.

Seiza means "proper sitting" and if you do it on a big cushion, it won't impact your knees very much.

If your lower anterior chain is tight, Seiza is an excellent way to find balance.
So far in my practice, I've found Seiza to be very helpful. It's taught me the importance of proper spine alignment, and reminded me that pain can be a balancing force in short increments.
