We have some rather boring rain coming our way
still a good chance for many US folks to see the auroras tonite
Now that's what I call a good geomagnetic storm! The strongest since the May event.

While the CME has passed, the solar wind is still quite fast, so any flip in Bz towards the south can cause moderate or perhaps strong storm conditions (nothing like yesterday though).
Wow let’s hope this hold after the sun sets for us in North America
With Milton now extratropical and further moving away, here's a final cast with its full intensity and track and some trivia:

- So far, Milton has been the strongest tropical cyclone of 2024 worldwide.
- Milton is now the fifth-strongest Atlantic hurricane on record, surpassing Katrina (2005).
- Milton is the second-strongest Gulf of Mexico hurricane on record, only behind Rita (2005).
- Milton's central pressure dropped 84 mbar, while the winds increased 90 mph in 24 hr (07/00z to 08/00z). This makes it the third-fastest period of rapid intensification in the Atlantic, only behind Wilma (2005) and Felix (2007), and the fastest in the Gulf of Mexico.
Milton pulling away from Florida, still as a Category 1 hurricane.

Expected to become extratropical in a day or so.
The backside of Milton might be rainless, but it's still dangerously windy.

Dangerous situation unfolding as the NWS has issued a Flash Flood Emergency for Tampa Bay, Saint Petersburg and Clearwater.
NHC says Milton has made landfall near Siesta Key, FL @ 120 mph/954 mbar.
Extreme Wind Warning in effect for Tampa Bay and surrounding areas.

People who receive this warning need to seek shelter now.
These are the most courageous people I know. This is a NOAA aircraft flying into the eye of Milton at 10,000 feet!
Milton nearing the Florida coast with 120 mph/948 mbar.

Shear and dry air intrusions degraded Milton as expected. The south side of the eyewall is completely open, with heavy rain restricted to the north side. This was nicely predicted by hurricane-specific computer models. However, the lack of precipitation doesn't mean wind won't be extreme.

As I mentioned in previous casts, life-threatening storm surge and flooding is expected. There have been also reports of tornadoes (some of them strong) spread across central and south Florida as well.

Another risk I didn't mention is the occurrence of tornadoes associated to supercells in the outer rainbands of Milton. A tornado watch has been issued for the whole central-south Florida, including cities such as Tampa Bay, Sarasota, Miami and Ft. Lauderdale.
According to the latest surge forecast Tampa Bay might be spared of the worst. Not so good news further south. Regardless, the flood threat is still very high.
Milton definitely feeling the increasing wind shear this morning. Still an extremely dangerous Category 4 hurricane @ 155 mph/918 mb.

Expected to make landfall tonight.
Do you have a bucket list shot? This was one of mine. To capture the Aurora with distant lightning

It’s not the greatest shot but it’s still there. The lightning is in the lower right just above the tree line.
Milton has an almost perfect eye. What a beautiful beast @calypsocat what do you think will happen when Milton interacts with the storm ahead of it? Will it destabilize Milton? Will they combine?
Mind-blowing dropsonde in the southeastern eyewall with 160 kt (185 mph) surface winds. These measurements are instantaneous and not necessarily represent 1-minute sustained winds, but that doesn't make it any less insane.
