The Art of Fermentation
$18

The very best book on home fermentation. Covers kraut, kimchi, and pickles, but also yogurt, beer, sourdough, koji, miso, and much more. I just used it to make some pickles. It's one of my indispensable kitchen reference books.

You should read all 500 pages on the science, lore, and culture of fermentation. But you'll probably discover it's simpler than you think. You can ferment just about any vegetable with 2% salt by weight and sufficient patience.

Aroma diffuser by MUJI, ~$100

I can appreciate minimal Japanese design that pairs with functionality. This aroma diffuser/lamp has been my favorite thing for years. Very useful especially when the air is dry. Adds a nice ambiance to the space too, I can’t recommend it enough.

Merino Wool Buff, ~$28 (can be found for less)

I have one for over 10 years and use it very often. As a scarf, eye mask, face cover for skiing, or sometimes to simply hold items in my bag. I've gifted a few to family and friends and they always comment on how useful it is and how much they like it.

A shoehorn.

I'd never need it β€” I just jam my feet into my sneakers, no problem. But every time I have guests over and they're about to leave, they always ask, β€œGot a shoehorn? Oh well...” And then there's a very dramatic moment as they sigh and untie their shoelaces.
One time, I hosted an exchange student from Duluth, and he was like, β€œWHAT IS THAT?? I NEED ONE.” He went back to the US with a shoehorn in his suitcase.

1000ml Pyrex Erlenmeyer Flask, No. 4980
$20

I have tried and failed to become a wine guy, but did manage to learn along the way that pretty much every wine benefits from decanting. This is what I use.

Scientific glassware is great in the kitchen: tough, cheap, heat resistant, and good for measuring and mixing. Make sure you're getting real borosilicate glass from a reputable supplier. (Pyrex glass will say "PYREX" in all caps).
