"A brand taste is also a common thread - a throughline - connecting different areas of culture into a recognizable brand narrative. There’s more than one way to tell a story, and world-building is about interstitial storytelling, with one area of culture (e.g. food or art) conveys a piece of emotional puzzle compatible, but different, to others."

Kelela via Document Journal:
"Everything is intentional. What I love is that if you see my friends who might not be musicians, who are artists in other disciplines, there’s a rigor to how they’re thinking about themselves—their place in the world and their own healing. I’m looking for a tenderness. A ‘comfort-with.’ I’m looking for bandmates and creative partners in general who are in touch with that part of themselves and are leading with vulnerability in many aspects of their lives and with whom that ethic would resonate. As many spots that my personal economy creates, I’m wanting to fill it with those people. I do prioritize Black people. I do prioritize queer Black femmes, to be really honest, over everybody. That’s why you are doing this interview. That’s why Ahya [Simone] is on harp. That’s why Alayna [Rodgers] and Sis [are on vocals]. That’s a big part of what I’m doing and I want it to serve us, because there are so few contexts that do."

“There are a lot of facets of me that come out through dance, music, filmmaking, sculpture or set design. My practice has evolved in the last few years into ways to tell stories about these ‘tangible moments,’ so to speak.”

“I wanted people to understand the mind of Missy Elliott,” the rapper and producer said in an interview during rehearsals.
Growing up an only child, Elliott first began creating worlds of her own in her bedroom.
“I had mad friends in that room,” she said. “I would line my doll babies up and I’d put their arms up. In my head, they were clapping.” When she’s on the road, Elliott explained, “I want people to feel like they’re in that room with me and seeing the same visuals I saw in my head as a kid.”

“Is lore a hyperreal world-building extension of backstory, keenly shaped by the artist as a way of keeping fans in touch with their intentions?
Or is it fictional, left to be shaped by fans, with an eye to a world outside the artist?
In the end, both forms of lore feed into fans’ desire to go deeper and further, whether they’re delving into the weeds of one world, or building another planet in a star’s orbit.”

“A better strategy for today's artists, then, is to find their scene and build a sustainable core fanbase within it. Charli is a natural at this, having come up in the London rave scene and helped pioneer hyperpop.”
