“The book presents the influential method developed by Professor Rowena Reed Kostellow for developing the perception of visual relationships underlying art, design and architecture. Developed over fifty years of teaching at the Pratt Institute in New York, the teaching program, divided into four parts – Fundamentals, Advanced Form Studies, Space Studies and Development – is basically composed of exercises of increasing complexity, which aim to raise awareness of spatial relationships and enable students to operate them in their projects. The explanations are illustrated by photographs of objects built in class and conclude with examples of the work of former students who became prominent in the field, including well-known figures such as Tucker Viemeister, Ralph Applebaum and Ted Muehling.”
