Today we’re announcing that @a16zcrypto is leading an $80M Series B financing of PIP Labs, developer of @storyprotocol.

Story is a blockchain protocol that allows creators to register their IP so they can track and monitor use, protecting their legal and economic rights. The goal is to create foundational infra that can underpin a new economic covenant between creators and platforms.

The team behind Story has deep tech and creative expertise. CEO/cofounder @s-y-lee has impressed us with big-picture vision and world-class tactical execution. Cofounder @jasonzhao studied CS at Stanford, dove deeper into AI at DeepMind, and now leads technical development on Story.

For AI systems and creative people to happily co-exist, creators need a modern way to ensure they get compensated for their work. Story takes a proven approach — IP law — and updates it for the age of AI.

We are excited to support the Story team on this important mission.

Just as being pro free speech means supporting speech acts you might not like or believe in, being pro innovation means supporting research and development in areas you might not like or believe in.
Same post on Farcaster and X - roughly 2x the engagement on Farcaster

“The United States’ advantage is decentralized and open innovation. Some people argue that we must close our models to prevent China from gaining access to them, but my view is that this will not work and will only disadvantage the US and its allies. Our adversaries are great at espionage, stealing models that fit on a thumb drive is relatively easy, and most tech companies are far from operating in a way that would make this more difficult. It seems most likely that a world of only closed models results in a small number of big companies plus our geopolitical adversaries having access to leading models, while startups, universities, and small businesses miss out on opportunities.”

Coming off a big week in DC and a series of election wins for pro crypto candidates, we’re excited to announce an additional $25 million in new contributions to Fairshake and related entities, bringing our total to $47 million. 🇺🇸

The House of Representatives made history today by passing the Financial Innovation and Technology for the 21st Century Act (FIT21).

FIT21’s success is proof that protecting blockchain technology in the U.S. has strong, bipartisan support.

More below. ⤵️
In the next two weeks, the House of Representatives will vote on the most important piece of crypto legislation to date: FIT21.

We’ve long called for regulatory clarity that protects consumers and innovation and the FIT21 Act will do just that.

Is listening to audiobooks as edifying/educational as reading?
I wrote an oped in The FT.

My goal isn't to defend or to diminish memecoins.

It’s to point out the backward incentives of a regulatory regime in the US that lets only memecoins thrive — while companies & tokens with more productive uses face hurdles. https://www.ft.com/content/1ceaa1c6-47df-4430-950e-ffcbf1cc8f7b
Looking forward to speaking and signing books at the Harvard Blockchain Conference in Boston tomorrow.

It'll be a fireside with professor Tom Eisenmann, who taught me many of the lessons on building networks that I wrote about in Read Write Own. Hope to see you there!

We got to talk about:

- internet history
- little tech vs big tech
- internet economic models
- composability & open source software
- blockchains & tokens

And much more.

“Death of the middle'' is a useful framework for predicting how new technologies will affect markets.

The classic example is retail, once dominated by department stores like Sears and Kmart, until the internet drove consumers to two extremes: high-status premium brands and hyperscale internet retailers.
It has been rewarding to see the book resonate with so many people around the world the past couple of weeks.

Here are just a few of my favorite mentions from the Farcaster community thus far:
Read Write Own is #9 on the New York Times Nonfiction Best Seller list, and #25 on USA Today’s Best-selling Booklist (both fiction & nonfiction).

I wrote it to help more people appreciate the potential of blockchains for building a better internet, and I’m grateful it resonated with so many of you.

Thank you 🙏
