Finally watched Planes, Trains, and Automobiles last night. At one point, John Candy’s character mentions that he “hasn’t been home in years”, and you get a window into the freedom and existential emptiness of being a salesperson on the road. I won’t ruin the movie with the twist at the end, but highly recommend. It’s sort of Groundhog Day-lite.

At Deep Springs itself, a cabin has been built in his honor by a friend, who had the distinction of going through an entire year without showering. Painted on the walls, among big, colorful feet, a Pablo Neruda quote, and a Chinese character, is a poem: “I don’t know about life. I don’t know about love. I don’t know about God. I don’t know about art. All I know is I miss you.”
