Guiteau on July 2, 1881, but the president did not immediately succumb to his injuries. Over the course of several months, his health worsened due to infection and poor medical care, leading to his death. Garfield’s assassination deeply shocked the nation, and his death led to increased efforts to reform civil service, culminating in the Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act of 1883. His presidency, though brief, remains significant for its role in the reform of American politics.
