Found a garden with some great tree ferns and gunnera in Nantes today!
@eatenbyplants.eth have you ever seen one of these? I want one!! Never seen it before. Wonder if it would be house plant suitable 🤔
Slow start to the year for the garden (due to me not putting in the effort last month) but it’ll get there eventually!
Sorry everyone, this photo just doesn't cut it. The plants are Gunnera mannicata and rhododendron. Sadly neither of which I pictured clearly enough. I've never seen Gunnera on a cliff like this! Also sadly, it's now a problem species in the UK and can't be sold with the exception of the dwarf varieties 😭. See below
Here's a zoomed in picture with the offenders ringed. If it still isn't clear I will just have to tell you 🤷😉. I probably should've taken a better picture in the first place!
Apologies for the lack of being around! darn life getting in the way.
Am in denial how much work I need to do in the garden, and have a boat load of bindweed to remove before I can even get started. A1 demoralisation!

Lemon update - full flower and a few others have appeared now 🥳. I have to put tree grease on since last year there was a major ant problem and I lost most of the flowers as a result. Fingers crossed 🤞
The only problem with keeping the lemon outside all winter is that flowering is really delayed meaning fruit may not ripen enough before winter. At least there are nearly flowers though!
Lemon ready to be moved to summer quarters now. Believe me, this is one spiky job- it's lethal😂
Banana looks pretty good. Conditions were obviously reasonably to its liking in the tent!
Unpacking the lemon from it's winter quarters. Seems to have wintered fairly well although well behind lemons under glass. Banana plant bunked in there too!
Unwrapping the first two (and smallest) stacks of Musa basjoo banana plants here in the UK
Finally got round to posting a picture of the phoenix canariensis my son has grown from seed👏 . It's getting tru leaves now. I'm forcing it on as much as possible so hopefully it will get big fairly rapidly 🤞. This a year and a half old now.
Looks like spring might finally be springing! Warmer temperatures in the lemon tent today, much more like I need although still cold at night. Gonna have to watch the watering now!
Endlessly potting up cannas and dahlias in the poly tunnel today…. a month at least behind schedule…
I have at least twice as many left to do
These canna and dahlia plants have been dry stored through the winter, and now showing growing shoots.. so time to get them in some compost so they can get some roots down.

Today's such an exciting day 🥳🥳 . Not for the reason you think but that too😏. Flower bud initiation on my lemon tree over-wintered outside in the UK! I might be able to have a G and T later this year 🤣.
New tree fern crosiers appearing! Always reassuring when these furry little monkey tails pop up. (Dicksonia Antarctica)
Got the Colocasia’s out of the dry store (top of kitchen cupboards 😂) - checked them over and potted up. Well over a month late getting them started this year 🤦
Lots of potting up over the weekend, mostly getting the Colocasia started, and also the Ensete bananas…
Tetrapanax, Cardoon and the Bamboo’s already getting some decent growth on already. Looking great today.
Wrapping fail. Looks like the fleece worked it’s way down over the winter somehow. Think I’ve got away with it though… although it could be quite rotten in there. Anyway, the other stacks look fine so it’s no issue anyway 😂
I know not strictly tropical 😉 but definitely architectural. Absolutely love that colour at this time of year, thought I'd share 🤝
Gunnera exploding out of its winter home like a beast (just folded up its own leaves and added other autumn leaves, old banana leaves etc late last year)
How’s yours doing?

This was the process of unwrapping the bananas last May. It’s almost that time again to unwrap them this year! These are Musa basjoo.
