The three reasons our Southern Resident Orcas are endangered despite orca populations thriving throughout the world.
🐋 Decreased quantity and quality of prey (Chinook Salmon)
🐋 Presence of persistent organic pollutants.
🐋 Disturbance from vessel presence and noise.
There’s a small window of time left to help safeguard the future of our precious friends.

What better day to talk about Reefnet fishing than on #NationalGoFishingDay?
Reefnet fishing is a traditional, sustainable fishing method used by Indigenous peoples in the Pacific Northwest, particularly the Coast Salish tribes. It involves setting up a net system over tidal channels where salmon naturally migrate. Fishers use floating platforms and underwater nets anchored to the sea floor. Spotters, often perched on high platforms, signal when a school of fish approaches, and the nets are then raised to trap the salmon. This method allows for selective harvesting, minimizing bycatch and preserving fish populations.
