We’re devastated to share that things don’t look good for the recent addition to the L-pod. Biologists observing the endangered pod saw the small emaciated calf on two occasions.

“It was wrinkly and lumpy and, uh, the skull was showing, you know, I mean, that just. That’s a sign that calf is not long for this world,” said Howard Garrett, Co-Founder of Orca Network.

We’re building a tiny but mighty center on our property on Lummi Island. It’ll be a community hub meets seafood and produce store, where all profits benefit our non-profit. It’ll also be a place where anyone can come and learn about sustainable and regenerative aquaculture.

If you’d like to support our efforts, please consider donating your $Degen tips to this cast. 🎩

With deep gratitude and appreciation,

Team Wave Warriors

Thanks to your generous donations we were able to bring an eco-education workshop to the Bellingham Seafest today. We’re connecting young eco-stewards to the endangered orcas through hands on, art-centered learning experiences.

“If we do nothing, I think we will lose this population forever.”

A recent report published by Williams and 16 other scientists details the accelerated decline of the endangered orca whales.

Exciting news—We have a new calf! L90 and her new calf L128 were spotted near San Juan Island, and both are thriving!

🐋 The calf is tiny, but nursing and moving well.

🔊 Orcas have their own songs, taught by their grandmothers. These matriarchal pods are a testament to the strength and intelligence of these creatures. Help us protect this incredible legacy.

The three reasons our Southern Resident Orcas are endangered despite orca populations thriving throughout the world.

🐋 Decreased quantity and quality of prey (Chinook Salmon)

🐋 Presence of persistent organic pollutants.

🐋 Disturbance from vessel presence and noise.

There’s a small window of time left to help safeguard the future of our precious friends.

More than 80 orcas were captured in Penn Cove near Puget Sound in August 1970.

Seven were sold to marine parks, and at least 5 died.

The Southern resident orca population are critically endangered.

What better day to talk about Reefnet fishing than on #NationalGoFishingDay?

Reefnet fishing is a traditional, sustainable fishing method used by Indigenous peoples in the Pacific Northwest, particularly the Coast Salish tribes. It involves setting up a net system over tidal channels where salmon naturally migrate. Fishers use floating platforms and underwater nets anchored to the sea floor. Spotters, often perched on high platforms, signal when a school of fish approaches, and the nets are then raised to trap the salmon. This method allows for selective harvesting, minimizing bycatch and preserving fish populations.
