Apple lost $2.5 million by mistaking counterfeit iPhones for real ones

For three years, two Chinese citizens have been carrying counterfeit iPhones to US service centres and Apple shops, demanding that they replace the defective device with a new one.

To avoid being caught, the fraudsters forged serial numbers and IMEIs from real devices under warranty, and sent the grey iPhones to service centres from different mailing addresses registered in two different cities - Baltimore and Germantown, Maryland.

Over three years, the criminals managed to send about six thousand of counterfeit smartphones to the service centres. As specified by the U.S. Customs Police, the entire batch got into the country from Hong Kong.

Caught by carelessness: one of the fraudsters left a request for warranty service, indicating his real name. Both received four years in prison.
Phones may get a ‘guest’ mode

Apple has patented a guest mode for iOS. It will allow you to give an iPhone to a friend or a child without fear that the latter will spoil or delete something important.

According to the patent, iPhone owners will be able not only to configure which applications and functions will be available to the guest, but also to make individual documents and photos available to all users.

The patent suggests changing guest access settings on the fly, including by logging in on another device, such as a second iPhone or iPad.
Harvard students have taught Meta* smart glasses to collect passersby's personal data

Harvard students have opened Pandora's box by connecting Ray-Ban Stories smart glasses to facial recognition and public databases. The result is the ultimate spy device.

The system works in near real time, but requires a separate computer that has the broadcast from the smart glasses open. The programme detects the faces of passers-by in the video stream, and then uses public image search engines to look for matches with social media accounts.

The longest tram in the world was launched in Mannheim, Germany Back in 2018, public transport operator RNV and Škoda Group signed a contract for the supply of 80 low-floor trams for 265 million euros. In September of this year, the 60-meter-long vehicle reached the German city of Mannheim, and, according to RNV, it is the longest tram in the world.

The unique tram does not end there. It can reach speeds of up to 80 km/h and can accommodate 368 people. Inside, there is a modern air conditioning system, an information system, as well as devices for people with low mobility. In addition, the car itself can be divided into six sections, which is due to its servicing at the depot. Google is trying to teach its own AI to think logically

Yes, it's trying to catch up in its ability to ‘think’ with OpenAI's o1 model. The developers, who are keeping the research secret, have made some progress,’ Bloomberg writes.

Anonymous sources of the publication say that the engineers want not just to copy the developments of OpenAI, but to design the process of thinking in their own way, better. To do this, they are using a process where the model doesn't answer instantly, but pauses after receiving a question. During this time, it considers other promts related to the question and tries to form the best answer based on them.

Stolen Ferrari 812 GTS found thanks to AirPods

Police in Waterbury, Connecticut, found a stolen sports car through the ‘Locator’ app, thanks to the Apple AirPods left inside the car, - reports the local edition of WFSB.

The carjacker didn't get far and was stopped at a petrol station. If an AirTag had been hidden in the Ferrari's glove compartment, the thief would have been able to detect it with an iPhone, but the AirPods went undetected.

The sports car was returned to the owner, and the thief was taken into custody - the detainee turned out to be a repeat offender.

‘Author’ of a painting created with Midjourney complains about the theft of his work

Two years ago, Allen created the painting Théâtre D'opéra Spatial and won a competition for artists with it. In response to rebukes that Neuronca was using other people's copyrighted works without the approval of their creators, he only threw around cool phrases along the lines of, ‘Art is dead, man, get over it.’

When his work began to be reused by other people, for some reason he didn't want to accept it. Now Allen talks indignantly about how outsiders are selling his painting in print format as NFTs and even cryptocurrency. And bemoans the fact that he himself makes too little money from the work: supposedly all of this creates a lower value for it. Which means his copyright should be protected.

The first images of Apple's A18 and A18 Pro chips have appeared online

ChipWise experts have published images of the A18 and A18 Pro system-on-chips installed in the new iPhones.

System-on-a-chip for the iPhone 16 were produced using the new TSMC N3E technology on a 3nm process, but the general principle of configuration remained similar to the chips of previous generations.

A18 and A18 Pro are assembled using Package-on-Package technology. The RAM is placed directly on the substrate, together with high-density metal redistribution layers connected with the rest of the chip elements by through jumpers.
The iPhone 17 Pro will get another new button

Apple will continue to add new buttons to the body of iPhones to emphasise the differences between the new models, according to insider Majin Bu.

The new button will get a capacitive sensor, will support touch gestures and will replace the physical volume rocker, which will be removed along with the customisable Action Button.

The insider should be treated with healthy scepticism: Apple is unlikely to abandon the recently introduced Action Button, which is rumoured to appear in the iPhone SE 4, and the loss of the physical volume rocker will upset many fans.
Apple's low-cost smart display for smart home control will appear in 2025

Apple hasn't given up trying to enter the smart home device market, so rumours about the development of these devices have been around for a while now. In another Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman revealed that the company will release a budget smart display for controlling home appliances and FaceTime calls as early as next year. In short, a ‘Yandex Station Duo Max’ in the American way.
Apple no longer wants to finance expensive films for Apple TV+

The Apple giant plans to stop funding big blockbusters, splitting the budget between a dozen smaller projects, Bloomberg reporters report.

‘Killers of the Flower Moon,’ “Argyle” and “Napoleon” performed poorly at the box office, and appearing on Apple TV+ created only a short-term surge of new subscribers that didn't stick around for long.

The company has already cancelled the theatrical window for the blockbuster ‘Lone Wolves’ starring Brad Pitt and George Clooney. The film was released immediately on Apple's streaming service.

Apple has added twelve Mac models to its list of vintage and obsolete devices

In total, the company added 9 MacBooks and 3 iPhones to the list of ‘old people’. Recall that vintage is considered a device that has been on the market for more than five years. In official Apple centres you can repair the gadget, but only if there are spare parts.

If more than seven years have passed since the release of the device, Apple puts it on the list of obsolete. The maximum that a service centre can offer you is battery replacement, and not always.
Xbox's new console won't be released until 2026

Microsoft won't be showing an alternative to the PlayStation 5 Pro anytime soon. The company is focusing its energies on the next generation of consoles, reports Windows Central writer Jez Corden.

It's likely the non-extgenic console will be shown in 2026, closer to the Xbox's 25th anniversary. In addition to the classic console, Microsoft is working on a Steam Deck-inspired handheld device.
iPhones won't switch to 2nm chips until the 18th generation

Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo writes that Apple smartphones will receive chips made on 2-nm technology only in 2026 with the release of the 18th generation. And even then not all: according to the expert, due to financial constraints, not all devices of the iPhone 18 line will be with the new chip. This means that the situation will be the same as it was before the release of iPhone 16, when the basic devices received the chip of the previous generation.
Valve is working on an ARM-powered VR helmet

The Verge author Sean Hollister believes that the Steam creator is working on a virtual reality helmet with an ARM chip. His assumption is based on two facts: first, yesterday insider Brad Lynch revealed that the Proton compatibility layer (needed to run Windows games on Linux) has ARM support.
Batteries of the iPhone 16 lineup added almost 10 per cent compared to the last generation

Portal GSMArena, referring to the Brazilian communications agency, reported on the density of energy cells of new Apple smartphones. Depending on the model, the increase was from 5 to 9 % compared to the iPhone 15 lineup.

In addition, the battery case of the older models is now steel, as previously predicted by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. But the basic iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus received an old-style battery.
California allows drivers to upload their ID to Apple Wallet

California residents will be able to prove their identity with their iPhone and Apple Watch by uploading their driver's licence to Apple Wallet.

Now, to check-in for a flight, rent a car and check into a hotel, it will be enough to tap the device and consent to the transfer of data using Touch ID or Face ID.
EU wants Apple to install iOS on competitors' devices

EU regulators have got a bit carried away with issuing fines to tech giants and now demand that Apple allow iOS to be installed on smartphones other than the iPhone. All this is served under the sauce of equality and fair competition, but the antitrust regulators have a sin that cannot be kept silent.

DMA, or ‘Digital Markets Act’, is the regulation that has caused Apple to twist and turn like a frying pan in order to make money in the EU and not to get another fine. The document is written in such a way that its wording can be applied to anything, which gives the regulator room to constantly impose new requirements and penalties.
Apple Music now has playlists for the hearing impaired

Apple's music service now has a section with a selection of Haptics Beats, Haptics Vibrations and Haptics Bass songs that support the Music Haptics feature. When enabled, your iPhone's vibration motor will vibrate and tap to the beat of the track. The feature works only online in Apple Music, Apple Music Classical, Shazam, and third-party services.
Android 15 will be released on 15 October

Google plans to release the new Android on 15 October, Android Headlines reports.

The company delayed the release of the operating system by two months due to critical bugs, failing to finish the work in time for the release of the Google Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro XL.

All devices in the Google Pixel lineup will be the first to receive the update. For the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, Android 15 will be the last major update.
Xiaomi has overtaken Apple to take the second place in the top of the global smartphone sales in August

The analytical agency Counterpoint Research writes that the Chinese smartphone manufacturer has displaced Apple to third place in the ranking of global sales in August. Experts note that the ‘top for my money’ for the first time in three years rose to the second line of the rating and this despite the fact that the sales volume remained at the same level.
