Apple lost $2.5 million by mistaking counterfeit iPhones for real ones
For three years, two Chinese citizens have been carrying counterfeit iPhones to US service centres and Apple shops, demanding that they replace the defective device with a new one.
To avoid being caught, the fraudsters forged serial numbers and IMEIs from real devices under warranty, and sent the grey iPhones to service centres from different mailing addresses registered in two different cities - Baltimore and Germantown, Maryland.
Over three years, the criminals managed to send about six thousand of counterfeit smartphones to the service centres. As specified by the U.S. Customs Police, the entire batch got into the country from Hong Kong.
Caught by carelessness: one of the fraudsters left a request for warranty service, indicating his real name. Both received four years in prison.

apple pundits don’t realize that regular people don’t care about this stuff at all
the number of people who both desperately want Apple Intelligence AND don’t know about the 18.1 beta is zero
normal people get new phones way after they’re released, have probably heard “Apple Intelligence” in passing for a year, and will be pleasantly surprised whenever it shows up on their phone
there’s no reason for Apple not to advertise it, yet i keep seeing takes like this again and again

Phones may get a ‘guest’ mode
Apple has patented a guest mode for iOS. It will allow you to give an iPhone to a friend or a child without fear that the latter will spoil or delete something important.
According to the patent, iPhone owners will be able not only to configure which applications and functions will be available to the guest, but also to make individual documents and photos available to all users.
The patent suggests changing guest access settings on the fly, including by logging in on another device, such as a second iPhone or iPad.

Got my new iPhone yesterday and was quite irritated with the lie of fast phone transfer. I connected old and new phones with a cable, saw a message that claimed completion in 20 minutes, which was then replaced with the accurate completion time of 10 hours.
Now to buy a bigger external SSD so I can offload my photos.

anybody upgrading their Mac mini next month looking to re-home an older one. get at me babes
Increasingly capable local models (like Llama 3.2 1b & 3b) make me very optimistic about inference at the edge - mostly because of cost.
However, I worry about how limited they’ll be if Apple continues to disallow any kind of meaningful background processing on iOS.

the worst part about the AI summaries is having to click into the actual messages and read them then assess whether the summary was accurate - one more mental step
