Just got off an amazing dev call/internal meeting and got so fired up about why we need to be using decentralized messaging like we’ve embraced decentralized money. Wanted to share a clip of what we discussed.

We’ve spent 15 years fighting for economic freedom but when it comes our messaging, the most private and intimate part of our digital lives, we will literally use an app that’s owned by 1 guy.

One. Single. Guy.

It’s insanity. And now there’s a way out, another option.

@converseapp built on @xmtp - Open protocol, open app, open platform.

Going to try and share more content from internal meetings as we aim to #OpenEverything at Ephemera
2 choices if you’re a developer:

Build on top of closed platforms, risk your entire business on top of things you can’t control.

Build on top of open platforms, work together to build something that can last.

We’ve seen the former play out. I spent years fighting that battle. You always lose.

Let’s win.

Say hi! 👋🏻
Our values for decentralized messaging. Here are the 3 pillars of our foundation and everything is now live today!

1. Open source, open standards, decentralized & secure protocol
@xmtp
2. Open source app, fork it, change it, make it work wherever you live
@converseapp
3. Open source programmable platform & dev tools w/ MessageKit (https://messagekit.ephemerahq.com) - Our platform to build mini-apps & AI Agents.

Open Everything.
Chat is the new OS.
Bots are the new apps.
/dev
XMTP is the open and programmable platform for messaging.

Programmable DMs and groups change everything with messaging.

Messaging is now open. Come build today, where you can’t get rugged and you can’t lose API access.

Secure, open, programmable.

The biggest thing we are working on with the new @converseapp is MLS encryption AND no phone numbers required + own your decryption key...

DM me for early access to the new MLS encrypted group chat.

Decentralized messaging is coming to be the only path forward as Centralized messaging apps continue to change their rules.

The fact that there’s a wallet messaging experience built on @xmtp that feels better than iMessage + has crypto built in + no one knows about yet has me So. Freaking. Pumped.

Check out how magical this @family wallet experience is using USDC @circle on @base + @sound-xyz on @optimism
We've love to support more developers coming to Farcaster, more people on Farcaster getting more reach, and developers and users getting better DMs because of a more open platform across this entire ecosystem.

This is when things start to change in Web3.

Our biggest problem is we keep refilling the top of the funnel vs keeping relationships with everyone who’s interacted with our products.

Retention is growth.

Every single growth leader in web2 knows this, baffles me web3 hasn’t obsessed over this yet.

And now it’s possible.
We changed our entire company culture with this one decision...

Last month, I made an offer to everyone at our company: $25,000 to quit.

6 people took it.

Here's a story about how we paid 20% of our employees $25,000 to quit

But, why?

Because I fucked up. I'm sharing the story to be open about what happened, why I did it, and maybe it can be helpful to others going through a similar situation. We did this at a time when things are really starting to happen. We just passed 2m identities on XMTP, bought the biggest consumer app on top of the protocol, have raised $50m in total, and the world needs a decentralized and secure messaging protocol more than ever.

Founders & CEOs, I’m curious what you think about this? If you’re a team member, would you like something like this?

We have a pretty simple developer strategy to build our community

Let's build. Life's too short to build on top of closed-sourced apps.

Building on closed-source apps is like playing a game without knowing the rules.

I spent the past 15 years of my career building on top of the Big Tech platforms. This actually means I spent the last 15 years of my career getting the rules changed, promises broken, and ultimately getting my businesses killed or forced to sell because I built on top of these centralized platforms.

If I was a developer, it would literally be the first question I'd ask myself. Is the app open-sourced too?
Fun fact:

The S in 'Telegram' stands for security

Big day here...

Ephemera has acquired @converseapp, and as of 9 am EST, we open-sourced it.

Converse is the simplest and fastest app built on XMTP. The Converse team has been building with XMTP since day one, and with the ability to reach over 2m+ identities on XMTP, we are excited to put more resources into building a better future together.

We need to make using crypto as easy as sending a message. We have already started implementing secure groups into Converse and we have so much more work to do so everyone in the world has a secure messaging application that is native to crypto.

Everything starts with trust.

The world needs an open, secure, and decentralized communication platform. One that everyone can trust to build on and use.

That’s why we are open-sourcing the application layer, which is also built on the open & secure XMTP network.

With today’s upgrade to the XMTP protocol, we are bringing the most advanced privacy and security in the world to an entire messaging network and economy.

The most secure and private groups now in production.

Privacy extends beyond just whether or not your messages are encrypted. Does the network reveal who you are DMing? What groups you are a part of? When are you sending messages? Does it protect your existing messages if a device gets compromised? Can you send messages securely after an old device gets compromised? Those are the hard things in messaging, and that’s where we have been investing our time to build a communication protocol that can ensure that privacy is a human right for everyone on the planet.

Other messaging protocols and decentralized social networks reveal metadata about who’s talking to whom and what groups you belong to.

XMTP is for your onchain conversations that matter. Your private and and important relationships.
