A great way to achieve new success is to acquire new skills and tools. This is a great explanation how to hijack your brain to learn new info and retain it.

While unintuitive (at least to me) multiple exposures to the same information set doesn’t work as well as limited exposure coupled with self testing. Regardless of your perceived learning style (visual, audio, hands on, etc…), learning and retention dramatically increases when you get tested on the content (especially non formal self testing).

Morning Tweaks! As the first official day of fall, my fam and I are putting up Halloween stuff and we started talking about if we were late to the party. My daughter and I favored about 1 month, my wife favored “whenever I want”.

PSA for all you /buildingbears out there! An effective way to achieve success is stretching your budgetary resources. A great way to do this is to find well maintained but slightly older machines/equipment until you hit your stride and can upgrade to better gear.

Go check out govdeals.com. This is an auction site that many US state/federal/municipal agencies use to sell off equipment. Has everything from computers, servers, vehicles, power tools, you name it. Be mindful, most places wont ship (some will if you arrange freight/pickup) so pay attention to where the item(s) are located because you'll probably have to go pickup in-person.

One last tidbit, once you register, you have to get verified which takes 1-2 business days before you can bid on items. I had to call their customer service and then send in a copy of my driver's license but it wasn't an overly painful process.

I've been working on getting some certifications to bolster my toolbox to try and upgrade my career path. My goal is to get all of my internal funding worked out with our corporate development folks and begin taking classes by the end of the month.

The two platforms that I'm considering are Smartsheets and Workday as we heavily utilize both at my org. Any thoughts from you successful mfers out there?

Something fun. Have you ever thought it would be cool to fly a plane but don't want to go through all of the training and required flight hours? Get your Google on and see if there are any flight schools in your area. Reach out to them and request to do a Discovery Flight. These generally cost about $100/hr to cover fuel costs but they'll get you up in the air. Depending on the instructor, they will usually let you handle the aircraft unassisted.

When I tried it for the first time, I was in Salt Lake City, UT and got to do everything except land the plane. It was an amazing experience that I'd recommend to everyone.
