I would have tolerated the limited content & engagement more easily if there were a sense of inevitability that FC will be *the* web3 social. Not so sure anymore given the many hard-coded assumptions into the protocol, the very nascent state of the tech, and centralization. Feels like 'sufficiently decentralized' is 'sufficiently crippling' at this stage.

Reflecting on the NFT craze of 2021-22 nowadays and astounded by how the most virgin/normie artwork (both pfps and gen art) was accompanied by the most degen speculation. Truly exquisite.
To me this implies that if farcaster ever becomes successful it will perhaps happen through alternative clients that cater to niche use cases and thus not as much dependent on twitter-like large network effects. and this might lead to a network effect in aggregate...
With the fingerprints DAO split/dissolution likely, I am thinking about how collector DAOs can be viable. My one guess is that it makes most sense when members personally own pieces from the collections that the DAO has collected from, and thus have personal stake in the continuous promotion of the work as well as something to lose if the DAO dissolves (sell pressure, loss of visibility/prestige for the collections).
Another one is the potential synergies between collecting and publishing or other revenue generating activities (nfts from your publishing arm fetch more because your curated collection lends you prestige). Fingerprints performance in this was hit and miss.

Controversial opinion but farcaster protocol will eventually need a token:
1) As a stake for hub operators (to prevent sybil attack)
2) To incentivize data storage (ensure there is a client-agnostic protocol infra)
3) To manage the lease of channel names and such.
That is *if* farcaster becomes large and decentralized. I appreciate the app-first approach of the team but hope that things will gradually decentralize. Otherwise, there is no need to bother.

Am I the only one who finds it odd that # of casts, reactions, etc. is hard-baked into farcaster storage unit economics? Why not have a content-agnostic pricing based on data/bandwidth?
For example, I like things more than I cast (and not alone in this), but there is more space for casts than reactions. I guess the assumption is that reactions can be more ephemeral and old ones can be deleted as new reactions come. But why not do this management at the client level and perhaps allow users to override if necessary?
Fewer assumptions and fewer hard-baked variables better for protocol design in general. Long term reaction data can be helpful to build better social graphs or recommenders. We cannot anticipate all the use cases now...

This is a stimulating read, but I see two things a bit differently on why web3 social has not yet taken off with the masses:
1) Web3 builders might be thinking more about their in-group status (among cool techies) than what end-users do with their product. Web3 builders are prone to status games as much as their target end-users, which ironically might be making them less user-centric.
2) Imo, the main benefit of decentralization is for other builders and serious content creators (as few end-users actually care about decentralization). The likely scenario is decentralized social media attracting users due to better UX thanks to composability.

The generative art market has been going through a supply-demand mismatch. The low barriers of entry and better tooling will make creation even easier in the future. What will then be the point of minting generative art, or any NFT?
A cynical first take is to predict a shift of power from production to distribution as it happens once the production becomes abundant. This privileges influencers, artists with name recognition / many followers, and publishers with large collector bases (be it studios or DAOs). Another potential effect is collectors becoming more defensive and sticking to existing bluechip collections.
That said, I do not think that this will be the whole story. (1/2)
