Thumbs Up & Friends

/thumbsup144

The official community. Here hypersub supporters can join in the discussion about pretty much whatever y’all wanna talk about—within reason. Weekly Tippers (✧420/week) and Monthly Patrons (✧4200/month) both gain access.

I have in fact considered using hypersub.

That consideration led me to the conclusion that I should use hypersub.

And so, pretty much since the moment it launched, I’ve had some version of an “onchain Patreon” up and running at sub.thumbsup.me

Consider becoming a patron, for your name in my newsletter/blog posts amongst other lil thankses 💚

35k followers AFTER the bot purge? I thought there would be so many more gone. This bodes well 😊
Even though I don’t think the term “decentralized” accurately describes most DeSo and open web projects, yet—

speaking of course of Bluesky/ATProto, Mastodon/ActivityPub, Nostr, Lens, and Farcaster, with emphasis on the former, more well-known projects

—the fact that the word decentralization is entering the zeitgeist with a positive connotation, and articles are being written by mainstream journalistic outlets about “the importance of decentralization,” is a step in the right direction.
I’m seeing a weird amount of Elon/Tesla simping in my feed. Feels like it’s probably intended as white supremicist dog whistles so I’m gonna start blocking everyone who posts pro Elon shit from now on.
A while back I turned off notifications from all social media apps (including badges).

This had two effects:

1. I choose when to use these apps, rather than being sucked in by psychological manipulation. Don’t worry my will power is still low and I still check fairly often. It’s great for not distracting me while I work though.

2. It makes for a pleasant surprise when I open an app and see 5-20 notifications at a time. Especially given that many of them are just likes. It feels better than seeing on like at a time.
I made it onto a block list on Bluesky.

Worse still, I’m not even sure I should try to argue. I don’t really engage in shilling and definitely don’t harass artists but, I went through my posts and even there, I have, unsurprisingly, mentioned crypto and NFTs a fair bit.

My 2025 Resolutions/Plans:

- less time/more intentional time online
- be less antagonistic, more respectful and constructive in conversation
- go back to school, learn new skills
- spend more time with friends and family
- read more, fiction especially (I mostly read non-fiction)
- meditate and work out consistently (for mental/overall health, not for physical gains)
- get involved with more cooperatives
- write often, share very little of it; in other words let my creative expression be for me and ephemeral, not a product to be consumed
I’ve decided to abandon my next article. I’m beginning school this week and I need to focus on that.

Plus I’m trying to decide if I’m going to continue this project at all.

I expect the internet to become a very toxic place in the coming days, weeks and beyond and I’m sure I want to spend my time online.

I don’t see myself deleting my accounts or even abstaining entirely, but I may make a serious effort to be less online.
One upside of Meta abandoning moderation is that it may push people away from the wholly open “town square” / “everyone is an influencer” model of social networking into more cozyweb self-moderated communities.

I’ve long suspected that’s a healthier approach to the internet, personally.
My next article argues that capitalism is good… kind of.

Stay tuned. I’m not rushing my work out anymore.
Have you read last month’s issue of Thumbs’ Update? In it, I made the case against copyright using nostalgia and leisure as the anchor points for this discussion. Succinctly, I talked about video games and emulation.

I’m working on the December issue now. If you want to support and encourage this kind of content, mint a digital collectible, or consider becoming a patron on Hypersub for a credit in the issues themselves.

People ask why I use so many different social networks.

The reality is the social web is relatively siloed now. Here on FC, crypto posts get 99% of the attention, where anything else I post is around 5-10 interactions, mostly from my closest fans.

On Mastodon (and Bluesky) this post got lot more interactions, led to new followers, comments, reshares, etc.

Not a critique of FC, just a fact about the state of social rn.

I think it goes without saying but if you ever see an account with a thumb sharing right wing content, it’s not me.
Did a whole bunch more updates, and honestly I'm obsessed. This is so me. Check it out. There's lots of little fun stuff to enjoy

❝ that’s so awesome! ❞
— me when I saw these quote glyphs.

Then like every time I encountered a new glyph I want to use, I added it to my text replacement on iOS

Have you read the my newest update? What do you think of the premise? Did you enjoy the storytelling? What about the artwork? Want to weigh in on copyright? Tell me your favourite videogames and way to play them?

Let me know in the comments below and remember for ✧ 420 a week, you can cast directly in this channel, not just reply; if that’s something that interests you?

New issue of Thumbs’ Update is out now on Mirror ✍️

In this issue I’ll be bragging about what I did on vacation, and why some might have called it “piracy.” 🏴‍☠️

I’ll cover some of the history of video game emulation, the recent attack on the Internet Archive, and make the ethical case against copyright (at least in its current form).

Enjoy! 💚

I've written nearly 3000 words promoting piracy. Can't wait to share it.
This is your regular reminder that I worked together with a real life animator (who worked on the show Robot Chicken) to create this cool clay animated visual for a limited edition NFT.

It's a stop motion video, made from real clay, displayed as a looping gif

1000 editions only, available on @base via @zora. Owners of the original, open edition (known as v1) on Ethereum and other chains were airdropped a copy and the artwork on their originals was modified, to ensure these 1000 are the only versions with this animation.

My thoughts on prediction markets: they are not of any informational value. At best they can tell you that people are financially invested in a certain outcome which might clarify bias in how/why they try to manipulate that outcome. At worst the are just unintelligible noise, passed off as wisdom of the markets.

Just call this what it is, socially-acceptable back-alley betting
