The Call of Distant Worlds 🌌

The night sky had always held her fascination, but never had it beckoned with such force. In the heart of the cosmic spiral, a deep blue glow pulsed with life, casting its ethereal light over the field of flowers.
Sharpless-308: The Dolphin Nebula. Blown by fast winds from a hot, massive star, this cosmic bubble is much larger than the dolphin it appears to be. Cataloged as Sharpless 2-308 it lies some 5,200 light-years away toward the constellation of the Big Dog and covers slightly more of the sky than a Full Moon.
This is the famous group of five galaxies known as Stephan’s Quintet. DID YOU KNOW that these galaxies were featured in the classic 1946 Christmas movie “It’s a Wonderful Life?”
The Hydrogen Clouds of M33. Gorgeous spiral galaxy M33 seems to have more than its fair share of glowing hydrogen gas. A prominent member of the local group of galaxies, M33 is also known as the Triangulum Galaxy and lies a mere 3 million light-years away.
UGC 1810: Wildly Interacting Galaxy from Hubble. What’s happening to this spiral galaxy? Although details remain uncertain, it surely has to do with an ongoing battle with its smaller galactic neighbor.
Art by Alfred Kelsner for Kelsner Saturday!

Can you see the monster? Inside the head of this interstellar monster is a star that is slowly destroying it. The huge monster, actually an inanimate series of pillars of gas and dust, measures light years in length.
