We kept walking, and the “model” who wanted money for his photo was a bit ahead of us. Three of our friends were still up front, but they were already heading back toward us—it looked like we had reached the end of the neighborhood.
To our right, there was a big yard with a few rundown houses, and a group of about 8-10 guys hanging out, doing something. The "model" stopped near the yard and, probably assuming none of us understood Spanish, started shouting at those guys.
He literally yelled: “Hey, there are five white idiots here with cameras!”
Right at that moment, our three friends caught up with us. Alex immediately said we needed to get out of there—fast. I knew why, but our friends hadn’t figured it out yet, so Alex just grabbed one of them by the hand and quickly started walking back. I didn’t need any convincing.
Meanwhile, the "model" was already talking to those guys, pointing straight at us.

Three photographers went ahead, and Alex and I fell behind. We had already walked quite a distance, and the houses around us began to look more like abandoned construction sites, where people actually lived.
A local guy approached Alex. After a moment, Alex took a few photos, and they started talking. That's when I approached them and heard what they were saying. To my surprise, they spoke English, although Alex spoke pretty decent Spanish.
The whole conversation boiled down to the fact that the local guy wanted to get money for the photos (even though he approached Alex and asked to take his photo). He said: "You're shooting for a magazine! You're getting paid (oh, if only it were true! 😂), so I should get paid too - 100 bucks per photo."
Alex just calmly deleted the photos, showed that he had no more photos, and we moved on...

There were five of us, all with cameras, of course. By the way, Dominicans love posing for photos, even though they never ask how to get them later! We kept walking down this one street, passing by a kid’s birthday party happening right by the road—it was super lively and fun.
On the way, I ran into some mechanics I already knew—the ones who had fixed my moped before. Then we crossed a “line” I had never gone past before.

What is the Haitian Pit?
It's a neighborhood on the outskirts of Bavaro. There's only one road through it, heading towards the town of Higuey, lined with buildings of varying levels of poverty - some slums, some not so bad. The further you go, the poorer it gets.
At the entrance, the road suddenly drops steeply, as if you were going down a hill. The neighborhood is mostly populated by Haitians, hence the name. At first, it looks pretty decent - there are little shops selling fake sneakers and stuff. Then you see the repair shops - I used to get my scooter fixed there all the time. But then... I'd never been there - well, until the day I decided to take a walk there with four other photographers and an expensive camera. Hahaha.
Anyway, during the day, without a camera, on my old moped, I've been to the Pit many times, and it was generally fine - until that day...

By that time I already knew a few such places, but most of them were not very interesting. The places we knew in Santo Domingo were basically a one-way ticket to a robbery... One of my friends had his car window smashed at an intersection near one of these places - they took his bag and even tore off his side mirror. So yeah, we didn’t even mention these places, and they were quite far.
The only place close was the “Haitian Pit”. It was on the outskirts of Bavaro. I had been there many times during the day, and everything was fine, although people always said it was dangerous. That’s where we decided to go the next day.

I was trying to remember what I had already told you and what I hadn't, and I had to scroll back four months! Four months, Carl! This story is about another danger you can face in the Dominican Republic, although, frankly, it can happen anywhere. I've encountered this problem at home much more often than here.
I'll start the story itself on Monday, but the danger I'm talking about is crime. I know a few stories involving people I know - some have been attacked, others have had their apartments robbed... But personally, I've only experienced it once. And that's what I'm going to tell you about... on Monday, hahaha 😅
