Cabbages, cauliflower, leeks, and broad beans all in this long raised bedโฆ leeks and beans are doing well, they grow like brassica are recovering fro snail/slug damage.
Chickpeas in the new raised bed going well.
I grew them last year, they grow like a small bush. Unfortunately I tried to dry them and messed it up so round 2! (Not drying, making hummus this year)

For anyone who wonders why I share pretty "rough" looking pictures at my /allotment sometimes, well, it's simple:
I believe that the allotment is about productive growing. It's not a beauty contest.
I want to share realistic life/challenges on my plot, not tarted up beauty pics--there's always /gardening for that!

One of today's /allotment missions was to fork & de-weed this unused area, make a big ol' mound and plant a tomato. Before (right) and after (left) pics below.
Fucking horse tail is out of control in our area, they're horrible. On the left corner there's some perennial spinach that just self-seeds everywhere, we cut lots of it down, and ate the tender leaves tonight.
The right side are some elephant garlic that didn't fit into the allocated area... garlic overflow ๐น๐ง

Today's /allotment bounty: asparagus and spinach. 0 km distance travelled, 0 days from crop to stomach. 0 chemicals sprayed. The way nature intended.
Tossed in olive oil, Himalayan salt + crushed black pepper. Bit of grated cheese on the spinach for fun. Whacked them into the oven as part of our dinner tonight.
Handy tip for those growing asparagus and find them too thick: I tend to peel some of the tougher skin near the bottom then slice them in half. They end up super tender after cooking like this.

Was at the /allotment a few days ago, and it's great to see the fruit trees developing nicely!
Pears (left) and apricots are heavily laden and forming well this season.

We went to the /allotment today, lots of things in full growth mode, always amazing to see!
Apricots forming really well this season, tree is absolutely laden!
A dwarf apple tree (Red Falstaff) which we prune and train as flat (2D) as possible, is flowering heavily.

Apparently my waifu went to the /allotment at 7:30AM this meowning, and harvested some of our asparagus (I was asleep after working 'til 3AM last night and had no idea!)
I processed and cooked them for dinner this evening.
No chemicals, 0 km carbon footprint, and 0 days from harvest to stomach.
... and dat is why we grow. ๐ค

Went to the /allotment today and forked some soil.
It is what it is. Spring feels. ๐๐ป
It was also great to see all the stone fruit trees (cherry, peach, apricot) in flower... promise for the upcoming season! ๐ฎ๐บ๐ธ

I have a few analog thermometers in my /allotment
One is inside the shed, the other is outside. Guess which is which?

Was a nice but cold day, so while our daughter fell asleep in the pram after a playground session, we hit up the /allotment.
Preparing for the spring bonfire/incineration in a few weeks by cutting up some larger branches, weeding, and turning some soil on our plot.
Tulips are coming up, which is always a promising sign of spring around the corner!
So much to do, and so little time--as always.
Have you been to your plots lately, frenpai?

We hit the /allotment today and I finally managed to prune our peach, cherry and fig trees! Here's before and after shots of the fig.
So nice to look across the plot and *finally* see all the trees at a level, non-crazy height. ๐น

Goals!!!
I saw this on FB and thought of you lot!
apparently theyve removed the soil from underneath the leaf nodes.
Unfortunately they hadnt credited the photographer.

Thick ice sheet I took from a water bucket at the /allotment
Very happy I emptied and stored my rain gauge last week, otherwise I would have lost it, like the previous one which I forgot outside and it cracked.

It was bonfire night last weekend at the /allotment, lots of branches and other detritus burned to ash, and to be turned into the soil for next season!
Do you make bonfires on your plots? How often? We are only allowed to do them twice a year here.

With cooler days and plenty rainfall I don't have to monitor this gauge so much anymore. In fact, I hope I remember to take it inside so it doesn't crack due to frozen water. And I'll give it a good clean so the walls are clear again.
I love walking through the garden in the rain. The soothing sound of the rain hitting the hood of my coat and the views of the produce, make me appreciate nature. More people need to grow their own food!

Second round of pumpkins growing at the /allotment. The flowers are a delicious extra harvest from this plant.

Harvest time.

Also, this little robin kept hopping from branch to branch singing his li'l songs, while I was pruning out the fig tree. Great to have his company!

Pumpkin update! Went to the /allotment today, our "main" pumpkin is coming along nicely! Gave it a small rotation to keep it rounding off evenly.
How are your pumpkins doing?
Otherwise, lots of time spent pruning the fig, apple and cherry trees. The fig has grown massive, and needs far more pruning sessions this fall and winter, but it's getting there!

planted some seeds today.
water-blasted the chilli plants that have greenhouse whitefly
never had greenhouse whitefly before so am considering simply removing the chilli and pepper plants as they haven't been that productive
it's time for the autumn seedlings to rule the roost
