⚔️ From $286 to $0.34, a 841x AI Cost Reduction 🛡️ Artificial Intelligence vs Blockchain Technology At the end of 2022, I built a Recipe Generator website using one of the first API-accessible LLM models: GPT-3. Back then, I used 11.000 tokens and it cost me $3.15. During this year I've been implementing GPT 4o-mini in a new personal project. This project currently used 29.000 tokens and costed me $0.01, meaning; - $3.15 / 11k tokens = $286 / 1 million tokens - $0.01 / 29k tokens = $0.34 / 1 million tokens That's a cost reduction by a factor of 840, while the performance of the models improved A LOT. With costs this low, I can now test UX and AI responses freely during development, something that was a bit expensive and limited 2.5 years ago. With DeepSeek (China), Llama (Meta) and Gemini (Google) catching up very fast and even outperforming OpenAI (Microsoft), the AI race started, and we can only expect cheaper and better models, resulting in more implementations. We’re entering a world where AI can generate anything; text, images, voices, even realistic videos. Result: Truth is becoming harder to verify. Meanwhile, we have a technology called "the trust machine" (blockchain) that has scaled hard over the past years; Onchain transactions that costed $5-$300 5 years ago can cost less than $0.01 now. Which brings us to where we are now. On one side: A technology capable of generating anything digital, from convincing stories to lifelike images, voices, and videos. It can shape narratives, blur truth, and be weaponized for propaganda or totalitarian control. On the other side: A technology designed to verify what’s real in a world full of digital noise. A technology that focuses on privacy, individual freedom, and is already being used as a force against totalitarian regimes. I posted about those "two-camps" in 2022, but had no idea AI would improve so quick; imagine what it will be in 5 years. So I do think the Blockchain industry has some catching up to do.
