Part of my IRL job involves managing a re-engagement program for young people who struggle to attend school for a number of reasons
That means I work with a lot of youth who bring a whole raft of different experiences and challenges with them to the program each day
Today was not a /success for me, as one of the students got angry, aggressive, and rude at any attempt I made to explain my plans to help her. I started thinking that maybe I couldn't, and maybe it was time for her to leave.
Ngl, it kinda ruined my day. I'm fortunate to have good people around me to help me reflect on what's in my control and what's not, but you can't help but feel shit in those situations.
I'll get up and try again tomorrow, and I haven't given up yet, but wanted to share as I'm sure we've all had days like this!

Sometimes when life gets really challenging I create a list in my head of all the things that are putting stress and pressure on me
This helps me to
1 - separate them rather than just feel one big ball of stress
2 - acknowledge them for what they are, and
3 - tick those mother fuckers off when I get them off my back
Number 3 is what happened today with TWO big stressors, and then I went and played a great game of basketball and we fkn won
Today was a /success if ever I've had one!

Assertiveness
This has been one of the hardest skills for me to pick up. For such a long time it seemed to me that the only options were be nice (essentially be stepped on), or argue back (essentially be a dick)
It's only over the last few years that I've learned the importance of kind (👍) vs nice (👎) and how me expressing what I need and what I want clearly is not rude, and is in fact essential to good communication.
It's a kindness to myself to be assertive, and it shows respect to the other person by not treating them like they can't handle it.
How do you go with assertiveness? Or is there another skill that's been similarly tricky for you to pick up?
