And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
Emerging Faces has come to be seen as one of the first instances of painting autonomously created by a robotic system, but this has never satisfied me because we don't really know what autonomy means, or what creation means for that matter. Perhaps art is always approaching a kind of recursive horizon of emergence, always embodying this threshold place.
Breaking footage of the moment my latest autonomous artist rejects painting, and decides that all it wants to do is dance.
For past decade Emerging Faces has been on display around the world including New York, London, Berlin, and Seoul. For next two weeks you can see it at Christie's Rockefeller Plaza.
Emerging Faces at Christie’s
Reflection reflects on each layer before painting the next. Working the entire canvas each time, kinda like how when I paint in search of emergence.

"There are two types of artists working with AI: those starting from a photograph, and those lying about it."
This is something I heard multiple times in my calls with Harold Cohen, in a tone of disgust. My attempts to change his mind never worked, but eventually led to the Emerging Faces series.

Just slap somethin on it when you see a blank canvas staring at you with a sort of imbecility.

Everyone that followed here and gave address for a postcard. The work was finished last week and the postcards arrived. You are going to be seeing a lot of this painting.
Cool reflection announcement coming this week. And your postcards. I haven't forgotten about those postcards. Just started making them and will post them here right before the go out.
A reflection Work in Progress (WIP) with some of its aesthetic decisions visualized and simulated- it is reflecting hard on the composition.
The long march of Reflection continues...
Self portrait with 3 different neural nets and a dozen other AI algorithms made live on a website using a webcam to chat with me. This is digital version, but it also contains instructions for my robots.

People asking about the postcards. I want it to be of the first Reflection Live which is a little behind schedule. Will have postcards as soon as it is finished.
No new imagery, but the architecture is taking root as the creative mind is being organized into memories, moods, and stimulus. Also the code is being split into session based interactions as well as shared interactions. More work today and maybe if we are lucky the machines gets turned on today.
byteGANs will always be central to the theme of my art. In Reflection Live, you will find them accenting the backgrounds. Latest WIP - 15 Reflective Layers complete.
Another Day Another Layer. The progress towards Reflection Live continues. To repeat, I am hoping to be on physical machines by weeks end.
The https://warpcast.com/~/channel/reflection Channel just passed 100 subscribers so I will be sending out 100 signed Postcards, but why not 200? If we get to 200 by Friday, I will double the mailing. For those that need to provide a physical address, do so below.

GM waking up and continuing to work on my robots creative mind. Goal is to have it working on physical pieces by end of week.
Progress remain steady but slow...
Who would have thought programming a robot to paint emotionally evocative portraits would be so complicated.

Going to end the day with this portrait that was painted when the AI was going into a little bit of "emotional" overload based on its sentiment analysis...
There is a bug where when the AI reflects on the brushstrokes, it paints the entire area where there is that color, and colors darker than it, been a while tracking down the bug, so just posting a WIP here...
Reflection Live application after successfully executing 11 layers of Reflective AI. It looked in at itself 11 times, and analyzed the results to make the next layer better. Going to call it a day for now.
Another WIP and I search for a look where machines are reflecting on the image to incorporate as much emotionality as possible. Once I find it I will know, close but still searching...
The next frontier in AI is reflective and multimodal.
My art has long used both concepts, but the continuation of Reflection will be an interactive experience to explore them at depth.
Here is first artwork to come out of the 90% complete system.
Watch here on the /reflection channel for daily updates.

In the mess of studio made robotics, lighting, logic, and prototyping, I sometimes miss the obvious until testing.
Inside the red circle is a collision point that I have somehow missed - going to have to adjust lighting and camera rig so XY Table has clearance.

This was fun - cool to see all the possibilities once your wallet is connected to your social media.
