I’m so fucking frustrated right now about how hard it is to articulate and quantify non-financial value
the value of relationships, community, public goods, or neighbors who care about you

The Lowkey Comfort of Long-Term Narrowcasting
Reflections on a decade's worth of check-ins on the old school app, Swarm and the power of hyper-niche, cozy connections in a digital age
If I’ve learned anything from Swarm over the past decade, it’s that it’s really nice to find a burrow into a cozy corner of the Internet, one that feels a lot less like a fire hose and a lot more like that neighborhood cafe down the street.

deep /cabin lore: some pirates put a private key into a treasure chest and buried it somewhere outside Austin, TX
the chest has never been found. there's at least 5 Eth inside

You all want weird? I have your weird right here.
After hosting my first official meeting of our block association last night, I made you a video about how to take all of the hand-written notes and turn it into digital records with action items, summaries, and follow-ups in just 10 minutes.
Just one example of how AI is making the lives of community builders easier than ever before...

Block associations about to make a major comeback…
community-building tip: listen carefully to each person's passions and gifts, then make thoughtful asks for them to share those gifts with the community.
its a great way to make them feel valued and like owners/leaders in the group

New post: The invisible impact of everyday community
The longer I work among online and offline communities, the more I think about communities as less like a dessert, and more like taking vitamins.
Community-building takes long-term, consistent impact to nudge things along. Focusing too much on short-term vanity metrics will not only discourage you from progress but also distract you from this end objective.
More on this, and some reflections on my own work as a relatively new block steward for my community on the Upper West Side in NYC.

New post: The Egg Test - Measuring Community Like We Measure Engineering Teams
It's common to measure the health of an engineering org by how long it takes to change a single line of code
Can we apply this in how we measure the health of a community?
Ent: The Egg Test 🥚👇
This weekend I needed an egg while cooking so texted my building messaging thread to see if anyone could offer me an egg.
This so-called "egg test" revealed how long it took for someone to step in and support me (and maybe a little bit more)

There’s no local politics channel so I’ll be live casting here the town meeting I’m it.
We’re taking about a feasibility study about an unused piece of land near the park by my house
First 10 min have been spent on introductions and discussion of why more ppl didn’t get notified about the meeting 😔

Acorn Land Labs just dropped an 8-hour guide to building localized, decentralized living systems.
Fantastic resource for anyone curious about homesteading, off-grid living, permaculture, and/or opting out of the inherently unsustainable food/water/housing/energy systems that most of us take for granted.

turns out writing's easy. the hard part is clarity on what you want to say
once you've done the work of understanding your goal and how you'll get there, the writing practically writes itself

She’s been taking care of him for the last decade and now she has nothing to do and feels lost
I’m here in her house helping her create a community so she has something to look forward too and people to connect with

What if the future of cities isn't about building bigger metropolises, but creating tight-knit neighborhoods where people actually know each other? 🤔
In this episode, we explore how @cabin is building a "network city", aiming to combat loneliness and the rising costs of living in big cities, to create more fulfilling ways of living in our increasingly disconnected world.
Things discussed
- From remote residencies to local communities
- Difference between Network City and Network State
- Neighborhood Accelerator Program 👀👀👀
- Building thriving neighborhoods
- Starting small & growing organically
- Potential uses of crypto in neighborhoods & towns
- Community currencies and reciprocity economies

I made an image-only documentary review about the movie, "Join or Die" for you all today.
Such a fun thing that is only possible thanks to AI. Took me less than an hour.
Also, some pretty good nuggets in there about how community can save the world. But you know, the AI images are cool too.

the best hedge to global financial downturns is local community
A short guide to accelerating neighbourhood development in less than 3 years:
1. Be unapologetic about your interests. In every channel, broadcast you curiosities consistently. If you don’t have an interest, adopt one and love it wholeheartedly.
2. Learn to be a good host, by practicing hosting: dinners, tea, picnics, games, sports, reading groups. Attend events to learn about how others host, help them host.
3. Create a central channel of communication (the group broadcast chat) with people who are curious about your interests, or whose interests are interesting to you.
4. Host more events, make sure to encourage others to have +1s and +2s to increase the density of weak ties between those with shared interests.
5. Stimulate trade and help between the network. Swap clothes, recipes, ask for tips on fixing things at home, move furniture together, ask for favors, and address requests. Bonus points if you give ideas to others “did you know Alice also has a tomato plant?”
/ cont.

For the last five years I've been building a community in my neighborhood
It's been the best thing I've done outside of raising a family
Now I get to watch others like Bethany have that same experience!!

There is a lost art of staying put in one place
Most people nowadays (especially the higher classes) are traveling frequently - for vacations, conferences, toggling between summer/winter homes, etc.
There are certain things you only perceive when you stay in one place. Particularly things related to nature’s rhythms
