A place to discuss all things *nix

Spent half a day fixing my Linux gui, which decided to randomly stop working. Turned out it was just a fuck up in dot profile. Love it 🤣
The real trilemma:

Linux, NVIDIA, an external monitor.

Pick two
decided to give linux a go as my daily cos my laptop was starting to sound like a jet engine on windows - running cachy os on arch linux

what browser are we using? gave vivaldi a go but not a huge fan, cachy browser is nice but firefox based which makes me kinda ugh and i'm trying thorium out now

but before i go logging back in to a million websites for the umpteenth time and redownloading extensions - is there anything better?
Yesterday I migrated from Ubuntu to Pop!_OS to try something different out.

No regrets so far!! Compatibility with Steam has greatly improved (all MGSs work now!) and having an encrypted disk feels so much better for peace of mind.

Highly recommended! Can't wait for the #system76 #COSMIC desktop environment :)
I built a single-host configuration management tool awhile back and am trying to decide if it's worth shaping up into an open-source release. I think it hits a sweet spot between learning curve/complexity of Ansible etc., and the brittleness of sh scripts. That scratch anyone's itch?
A tasty Linux 🐧
there’s no feeling like erasing everything and starting fresh without looking back

how much of what you store on your computer is actually necessary?

have you successfully live-streamed a steam game using OBS on linux?

Got my Linux Mint distro all installed and customized! 🎉

Liking the experience of using it so far; had a few issues with the GPU that took some time to fix, but aside from that, it's simple, slick, lightweight, and easy to use.

Also it doesn't spy on me or steal my data!

Bye bye Windows.
Dist upgrading the laptop, wish me luck 🍀
A Day in the Life of a Linux User

I have a Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3 with PopOS and a secondary display.

Today, I tried using the secondary display as a standalone display by closing my laptop, which usually switches the display seamlessly. However, the OS started lagging badly, worse than Windows Vista (iykyk). I tried changing resolutions, switching primary displays, and other settings, but nothing worked.

I remembered encountering a similar issue with these devices in a different context (media lagging on the secondary display), so I looked it up on Reddit. The solution was to switch to Nvidia graphics from any other option. Interestingly, it was already set to Nvidia graphics.

The fix was simple but took me 30-45 minutes to figure out.

Switched to Hybrid Graphics (or any other option).

Restarted -> Switched to Nvidia Graphics -> Restarted again.

and it's fixed!

Who would've thought my muscle memory of fixing Windows devices (read: turning off and on) would come in handy on a Linux machine?
Decided to finally ditch Windows and start using Linux instead. What distros would you recommend for someone who wants to get into UX design?
The Practical Linux Hardening Guide

The repository is a practical guide to hardening GNU/Linux systems .

This is not an official standard or reference , but it addresses and uses industry standards .

This guide also provides you with practical, step-by-step instructions for creating your own secure systems and services . One of the main goals is to create a single document covering internal and external threats .

Omakub is interesting. I can't imagine anyone who already has Linux set up on their computer would use it, but I'm intrigued it.
