honestly why I'm bearish "personalized vibe coded apps for everyone"

I don't think many people irl genuinely want to be building their own software

interesting thing just happened to me, I've been noodling on a side project idea for an AI recipe app and then I found that someone built exactly the idea I was thinking of.

So I tried it and realized I don't actually think I'd use it that often. And now I no longer care to build it myself. That was quite a speed run.
Reading the technological republic by Alex Karp and while I like it so far there’s something funny about a guy spending 100s of pages railing on big tech for failing to build “for the public” while he’s worth 10B dollars lol
“But when services shift from commodity to premium product, they introduce friction. Rent-seeking models pile on cost and scrutiny, which kills exploration before it starts.”

With crypto dev I feel like pain most acutely with indexing + RPC providers. I set up an indexer for a base sepolia project and just calling eth_getBlockByNumber constantly to support the indexer exceeds alchemy free plan and the next tier is 200 dollars.

The exploration is killed before it starts. I can’t afford to pay 200 a month just to host a dumb little app that I don’t yet know anyone will care about

The artwork coming out of basepaint recently is incredible. Such an amazing project
Warren buffet was a real one for his IC important certificate idea — pretty crypto flavored idea imo, programmable money would make a program like that feasible without as much coordination effort

I've been thinking about this more
Dan's product led protocol development feels related.

"Users don’t use protocols, they use apps. Build the first app that is high quality enough to attract qDAU" --> loot did not have this (although that was sort of the point I guess)

"if you build it, they will come”. Can’t expect others to spend the time and effort to build high quality products if you’re not willing to do it yourself." --> I wouldn't say Dom was unwilling to build a product on top of loot, but it goes to show that without the initial catalyst of a compelling experience it's for an "extensible, build anything" system to win

I want to believe this is true but am not 100% convinced. Loot had an incredible energy to it and many auxiliary experiences were indeed built on top of loot.

Perhaps AI and vibe coding of today could have made the loot experiences 100x more plentiful but

1. Would they have been good? 100x means lack of cohesion, but also 100x more shots on goal which is a positive

2. I’m not yet sure if it’s possible to build just the base of an extensible system and expect it to turn into something people love vs creating something people love then making it extensible so people can continue to love the thing they already love in new ways. This is a depressing thought though because it means loot can never work

Product-led protocol development

If you're not willing to do it yourself, why would others?

If vibe coding had existed in 2021, loot would have worked.
from Sam Lessin's newsletter -- does anyone know what "Jet-A" is? The last piece about sponsoring athletes sounds nouns / gnars coded but I legit can't find anything on the token itself

style transfer is cool until everyone knows how to do it, then it will be distinctly uncool. I don't make the rules
Big shift on this new image model thing seems to be that you don’t need to be good at prompting anymore.

“Make it like this” works well now
has anyone figured out how to get base paymaster to work? the docs are outdated unfortunately and I'm struggling hard :-(
It's killing me how crypto flavored this idea is, need to write more on this in a bit

(crypto flavored in the sense that open, permissionless access to data created under a shared standard is great and powerful)

I get why you’d do it but man, just feels so insanely pointless to spend life doing something like this idk
