Most calico or tortoiseshell cats (the ones with black, orange, and white) are female because the gene that determines black or orange fur is located on the X chromosome:
• Females: XX
• Males: XY
Each X chromosome can carry a different color gene (like one for black, one for orange), so females can have two colors + white (white is controlled by a different gene).
Males usually have only one X, so they can be either black or orange, but not both. That’s why male calico or tortoiseshell cats are extremely rare, and when they exist, they usually have a genetic mutation like XXY, and they’re almost always sterile.
