Bitcoin Layers

Documenting Bitcoin layers and the technologies beneath them

The real adoption curve:
first they joke, then they trade, then they build on top. stage three is here.

A new DAO has appeared to support bitcoin builders!

The Rootstock Collective!!!
cbBTC announced. Base creator saying Base will be a home for BTC.

I don't see how Base doesn't take a large % of the bitcoin layers marketshare.
V1 of the bitcoinlayers.org website has officially shipped 🎉

Check out our site for the latest reviews on #Bitcoin L2s, sidechains, and more.
despite seemingly everyone's attention being on bridges, there are other problems to be solved to achieve usable bitcoin rollups

one being data availability (or the lack thereof)

Bitcoin layer 2’s are slow just like most of the teams building them.
#Bitcoin  price has dropped under the 50-day moving average

started playing with some bitcoin "L2s" today

withdrawals not enabled... v1 mainnets operated by trusted validators... multisig wallets custodying millions worth of BTC...

fedimints literally have better trust assumptions
With Current hype around BTC this post might be interesting for people on BTC that can get some free money :) https://warpcast.com/freemoneyonline/0x8c364966 more similar apps on our TG bot!

sent 50 bucks across the world in seconds, for less than a cent, on a rollup

when rollups on bitcoin?
Here's a neat idea for storing arbitrary data in blocks through tx ordering

A formalized metaprotocol could become more accessible with the rise of hashrate marketplaces (eg Lumerin) and private mempool as a service products (eg marathon's slipstream)

BitVM 2 looking super cool. Unlike the first model, this one supports permissionless verification of proofs

Looking fwd to seeing some implementations of the concept
Amazing to see a small Bitcoin layers community here. Building on @rootstock over the past year. Eth really was just the testnet 🫡
Stay tuned for analyses on live layers to launch

Stacks, Core, Lightning, and more will be reviewed and available soon!

We launched bitcoinlayers.org , an open-source tool for keeping up with the many Layers being built and analyzing their risks and security assumptions
There are many projects that identify as Bitcoin Layers.

We analyze them against the five different criteria pictured below:

At the risk of being reductive, there are only two areas to focus on for Bitcoin layers to be realized

1. A ‘safe enough’ BTC bridge
2. Tx validity enforcement

And 2 doesn’t reallyyy matter until we have 1
bitcoinlayers.org has a list of 27 layers so far (and will soon have qualitative analysis on each layer)
🚀Bitcoin Dogs, the First-Ever ICO on the Bitcoin Blockchain, Enters the Final Seven-Day Countdown

Hits an impressive $9.3M, presale ends next week
There are 2 days where the price will be $0.0374 / after that the price will be: $0.0404 and will be higher.

everyone, and I mean everyone, lost their fucking mind at bitcoin magazine today.

what they said wasn't that controversial
What's your opinion on execution environments for layers?

Stacks has the most built-out ecosystem of current layers, despite using the novel Clarity (soon to have ClarityWASM though!)

Rootstock has the EVM, which should be a huge advantage, but has fewer builders

Many new layers will use the EVM: BOB, Citrea, etc
new page up on the "Bitcoin Rollups" website! it covers how rollups could support new execution environments on top of Bitcoin https://www.bitcoinrollups.io/research-applications/execution-environments

posting this piece on rollups + sidechains enabling new developer environments for Bitcoin builders

& why rollups might be a better option than sidechains long-term

lmk if you have any thoughts! https://github.com/januszgrze/bitcoinrollups/blob/main/website/websitecopy/research/applications/execution-environments.md
a BitVM circuit is essentially a binary tree

which means O(log n) for challenging/proving if you have a proper binary search (bisection). nice, but not great

let's assume you had a BitVM circuit that proves vector commitments (ik I'm getting ahead of myself but bear with me), would this at all help?

We should be skeptical of the statement that L2s *need* tokens.

Does it help bootstrap the ecosystem + (maybe) build your own sequencer/prover protocol? Yes.

But saying it's a necessity isn't true imo.
New ecosystems often need a 'killer app' for adoption

as of now, Points/airdrop farming look like the only killer app for Bitcoin layers

I know the vast majority are yet to launch, but do you think we'll see a killer app other than yield (ie DeFi)?

the BTC community may need something different to pull them in

Rijndael from the Taproot Wizards team shared this covenant, built locally with op_cat

The convenant's spend condition is..... recursion lol. It may not be practical but it's a super cool proof of concept with op_cat

NodeKit is working on SEQ, a shared sequencer for Bitcoin layers

Anyone know if the big players in Eth shared sequencing (Espresso, Astria) have any intentions to get involved with Bitcoin layers?

AltLayer plans to use Babylon to inherit certain security properties from Bitcoin

Right now, Babylon offers timestamping on Bitcoin to Cosmos chains, which is great for long-range attack prevention! (I think rollups with centralized sequencers would also greatly benefit from this sort of timestamping!)
🟠 gm. we’re live with the seventh edition of the #Bitcoin Rollup. we cover:

-rollups
-sovereign rollups
-validiums/optimiums
BitVM was a huge technical breakthrough! It’s being explored by several teams to enable optimistic bridging from Bitcoin to L2s
