Discussing and discovering western classical music

Brahms Piano Concert #1 can also go on the list of piano concerts starting strong...

So much drama, but the second movement is, as Brahms wrote to Clara Schumann in a letter, a portrait of her. Very romantic.

Gm,

Every day is a good day to listen to Sakamoto, but one week before Christmas is especially good for Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence.

A drawing by Henri Matisse of Prokofiev in 1921 as Prokofiev was shocking the critics with his outside of their world music

“I strenuously object to the very word "grotesque" which has become hackneyed to the point of nausea...I would prefer my music to be described as "Scherzo-ish" in quality, or else by three words describing the various degrees of the Scherzo - whimsicality, laughter, mockery.”

Sergei Prokofiev
"Interesting" is subjective right?

I find classical music fascinating and others find it the most boring music ever

Fun fact is, without it, we wouldn't have the music we love and enjoy today

Today’s practicing session resulted in this little video, sharing with the world my progress of returning to Prokofiev war sonata no. 7. Streams of consciousness, extreme stress due to raging rhythms that Europe was beating as the war was entangling and disentangling. A fascinating piece that I have been working on for a long time with several long pauses. Now finally I think i understand it. It is one of those pieces that require us to live a life, to get shocked and slightly traumatized in order to process what composer wanted to express
On Saturday, I heard this Schumann trio live.

Normally, I don't listen much to Chamber music but this one has grown on me so...

Maybe the same will happen to you: https://youtu.be/BXzpnWECNn0?si=2bw5Y01AztcNK8t5

Reşadiye March by Donizetti Pasha aka Guiseppe Donizetti, the Imperial General Director of Music during the Late Ottoman period.

One can argue the late modernist revival of arts in the Palace, which included many a famous figure was the base layer for the early Republican modernization in arts and music especially.

Here you listen to the Imperial Band on a restored recording.

The best recording that doesn’t afaik doesn’t live on Spotify or APM, Gould and Rose performing Beethoven’s Cello Sonata in A, an underrated work from Beethoven’s peak middle period (Waldstein, Appassionatta, etc). Listen to all three movements. If only one, the 3rd

I got a new addition to my mental list of Piano Concerts that start with a bang, this'll wake you up from the Friday Morning lethargy.

Most Christmas Songs are happy-dappy.

But I like the more solemn ones - ever since childhood probably the only one I know all the verses by heart is Maria durch ein Dornwald ging.

We used to have an advent calendar song book where you were supposed to sing one Christmas song every day (musician parents) - this one stuck.

Here is a little excerpt from Messiaen today, very religious piece but is not about religiosity, it is about something much more, much less explainable and mysterious

Vingt Regards sur l'enfant-Jésus Première communion de la Vierge no. 11

I will probably document here as I am spending more time with this composer
I was just thinking, you know, a real good soundtrack for "being in the trenches" would be Shostakovich's 11th symphony.
