thank you for the intimate conversations, knowledge, cigarettes, precious time and energy, and/or awkward glares (as the case may be). i am better for having hung out with y’all. another FarCon for the history books!

one weird New York thing that i get nostalgic about is how terrified i’d always get of falling off the narrow platform at Union Square switching over to the L

what’s extraordinary about Reddit is people are allowed to dive into almost any obscure subject, really own it, and find other people who genuinely do too. it makes the platform more resistant to flattening. things become more homogenous when everything is on Main; they are a bit better when not only one centralized something is directly or indirectly the arbiter for a whole platform’s taste (regardless of whether susceptible to bad taste). you scale community (general) by scaling communities (localized).
anyway on a separate note here’s a picture of flattened Squidward

increasingly feeling this way about every social media or information app except Reddit
“he who writes for fools always finds a large public”— being a relatively-interesting boring person does better* than being a relatively-boring interesting person. it always surprises me to observe socially these being two separate spectrums with rare overlap.
*for engagement but not for the soul

might be a bold claim— i have lived up and down the west and east coasts and i don’t think i’ve found a more satisfying culinary experience than Boiling Point. i grew up in this stuff though.

i thought peace was fragile because it can feel like everything is always hanging on a thread, and you never know what it is that might happen in the news, at your job, or at home that would rock your boat into flipping
i might have been thinking about it wrong. maybe fragility’s got nothing to do with it. peace is a constant practice for me whether i like it or not. it’s not the kind of thing i can hoard and bank away. it is here when i choose it, gone when i neglect to choose. it is hanging on a thread only to the extent i forget to keep willing it into presence. now, now, and now, and now…

the engineering of the Gameboy was wildly industrious and elegant. i really appreciate learning about the problem-solving when every byte and pixel was a trade-off.

came across an old speech by Cory Doctorow from his blogpost today (link in comment). the speech is about AOL bots, which got me thinking: there is a subtle but meaningful difference between the two perspectives:
1. spambots take away from Farcaster
2. a reasonable >0 number of spambots is the cost of having a Farcaster (for intended human use)
both are true; one from the angle of loss; the other, cost. one might find a slight empowerment in thinking one is receiving something in return for an irksome sacrifice.
(i would prefer only up to a reasonable >0 number of spambots in the comments section pls)

the comment sections here are somewhere between Stage 3 and 4 of Baudrillard simulation. the machine acts like us but is not us. when we level up— maybe with some critical mass— we will not care that it doesn’t pretend to be us. we might even prefer to understand reality the way it presents to us.

if one doesn’t use Perplexity how would they know how to manipulate one’s spending? while this kind of candid acknowledgement feels baffling to me, i have spoken to enough people who genuinely appreciate receiving more tailored purchase recommendations.
