The New Music Business Podcast has become one of my gotos.
Ari’s guests range from musicians, to industry execs, to founders of startups in the industry.
He goes deep, but also does a great job quickly level setting on each new topic.
A goal: to get Farcaster on the radar of people like Ari, because we help musicians thrive here.

We're starting with LA.
The second SparkHouse will be outside of the US and I'm stoked to get back to spending time with creators all over the world.

This selfie I took with Michael Bolton in 2014 was the inspiration for my new company called /sparkhouse.
Not really, but also sort of.
It was taken at a popup we (Facebook) did in LA to help public figures get on FB and Instagram.
Mostly musicians and actors came through. People you’ve heard of but who don’t have big teams managing their presence.
It was massively successful and eventually repeated around the globe, both with irl activations and a ton of online content based on what we learned irl from creators.
I’m running back this playbook, updated with a decade + of learning and evolution in content, social media, and creator products.
Next stop: The Bolt* on Farcaster
This was taken on his phone and his assistant later emailed it to me with “The Bolt” as the subject.

Agree with so much of this. Creators get the short and of the value stick, even though they bring the most to the table.
We're on the leading edge of defining the future of the creator economy here on farcaster and base.
Now think about people who are native creators, musicians, artists, and not native crypto people. They care about making content, not coins.
How do we meet them where they are?
We're building SparkHouse to give creators the tools and community to define this future, to join us on the leading edge, and get them the value they deserve.

TL;DR Content coins are a great step forward, but they're not a silver bullet. We need to continue experimenting, matching the right monetization model with creators' desired form of output.
The goal is more sustainable, aligned value creation for creators, builders, and their supporters – many ways to get there.

In college I had a great job at the music recording studios and video editing suites at Syracuse University's Newhouse School.
I helped people troubleshoot their productions, got really good at using all the tools, and made a ton of brilliant creative friends. I could sign out any equipment I wanted, the coolest cameras, lights, etc. and the best part - I could use the studios after hours.
A highlight was recording the demo tape for Prospect, a hardcore band from New Jersey. We did overnight recording sessions. They all crashed on my floor. You can hear me in the "chorus of screaming bros" on a bunch of the tracks.
I saw them open for Earth Crisis at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ a few months later. The best part was after the show - watching some kids go immediately to their car and pop in the Prospect demo tape and crank it.
That was a million years ago, but it's one of the ways building /sparkhouse ties together my entire career.
Let's make millions more of these moments happen for creators.

My job at Facebook was to bring more content and creators on to Facebook and Instagram. I stood up a distributed global org (local teams, vertical specific teams) of people to do this because we found that the most effective way, by far, to onboard creators to any emerging tech was to meet them where they are.
SparkHouse will do the same, but with a focus on web3 instead of web2. Creators should own their content, own their audiences, and have a way bigger share of the value they create.
Our model thrives when creators thrive.
Think of SparkHouse as a constant pipeline of creators coming onchain, building community and value on emerging platforms like Farcaster.
We’re looking for investors, and for mentors to work with creators in our community. DMs always open.

Last year at /farcon I was inspired to start something new in the arena of my previous work at Facebook & Instagram, engaging creators and public figures to help them build content and community.
We need to make it easy and compelling for them to get onchain.
At first I thought this would mean building a public figure centric Farcaster client, a modern version of something I worked on for FB circa 2014.
Many explorations and conversations later, I realized that the best way for me to make an impact would be further upstream - truly meeting creators where they are.
We were successful (and I have mixed feelings about that success) at FB/IG because we put in the irl time. Offices and events around the world. Popup studios with legit tech to create, and access to smart, chill people to help you. Programming and community (online and irl) to help you grow.
We also took a global view, and respected and reflected the nuance of working in different markets, verticals, and cultures.
