Discussion and collaboration on L3s

We are thrilled to be supporting @steviep and @keikreutler and their work as @metabasedorg fellows—to explore new economic mechanisms that will not only grow community-owned rollups but Ethereum and web3 long-term.

Follow them and their work over the next couple months!

With centralized L2/L3s, a company is the block builder/proposer (captures priority fees) and the sequencer (captures sequencing fees). If only the sequencer is decentralized, is the rollup *really* decentralized, if most of the economics in the form of priority fees still go to a central party?

This is why community-owned rollups like @metabased are where things are inevitably headed. Decentralization of not just the tech but the full governance and economics which not only leads to more prosperous networks, but as a result, a more resilient, sustainable, and scalable ones.

Thanks to @macauley and the crew at @blockworks for highlighting the Metabased initiative, that focuses on community-owned sequencing via L3s and more. We're exploring what's next on-chain.

If you want to learn more—or collaborate—drop a reply here, send us a DC, and check out /metabased.

Congrats to @deployer and the Ham community. We’re excited to see more work that advances community-owned networks onchain. 🍖💪
We are metabased! @goldchain is now part of @metabased, a community of 20+ organizations working to decentralize the next layer of Ethereum. Being a part of this initiative aligns with Gold's vision to create a truly open and community-owned gaming ecosystem. Huge S/O to @iandaos, @will, + the @syndicate team for putting this together 🙏
/L3s
We're proud to help lead @metabased as a core contributing member alongside 20+ leading organizations.

The next layers of Ethereum will be community-owned and lead to a more free, open, and better internet ✨

NEW ESSAY: Metabased Progressive Decentralization

Following our post on metabased economic mechanisms, here we explore how /metabased rollups offer networks unparalleled flexibility in implementing and evolving decentralization models.

NEW ESSAY: Metabased Economic Mechanisms

After our piece on metabased rollups, the Syndicate team dug into the economic mechanisms that the metabased architecture unlocks.

For me, this is personal.

The world's economic systems have locked communities into someone else's rules and game.

We felt this when we worked on DAOs and now L3s.

Now it's time to put the power of networks themselves back into the hands of their communities where it belongs.

Proud to be metabased 🔥 @goldchain
Today, we’re sharing our development of a powerful rollup we call “metabased” and a new community-led initiative @metabased

Currently there are no paths for rollups to decentralize their networks to their communities to economically empower them.

We're going to solve this.

@syndicate ’s blog post inspired me to follow-up with some other thoughts on my side - block explorers for L3s.
NEW ESSAY: The Hard Problem with Decentralizing L3s

For a rollup-centric Ethereum to succeed at scale, L3s must decentralize to empower their communities, enhance resilience, and unlock new economic models.

But significant technical and coordination challenges remain.

NEW ESSAY: The Economics of L3s

L3s promise 10,000x lower fees, but face major economic hurdles. Our analysis reveals the challenges for L3s to reach profitability, current L3 use cases, and the future pathways to valuable L3 networks.

In my 10 years in the industry, I can distinctly remember 6 times after seeing and learning about something more deeply I became most excited:

2014: Bitcoin
2015: Ethereum
2017: ERC-20 and ERC-721
2019: Uniswap/AMMs
2021: Investing DAOs
2024: L3s

Something big is coming.

One of the opportunities with L3s we’re most excited about is customizability.

L3s offer modularity and customization options far beyond what’s possible with general-purpose L1s or L2s.

This enables for the creation of highly tailored economies and true community ownership.
/L3s
“Instant or near-instant cross-chain transactions will be needed for L3s to truly scale to enable better experiences for developers and users.”

Well put. This is a must for L3s to be useful.

If you need this today, my DCs are open
When teams ask us “Why an L3”, this is the advice we give them in terms of the biggest opportunities and challenges.

But for the teams who are going all-in on L3s with us and our partners, we’re working on these shared challenges together—to take Ethereum to the next level of adoption and community ownership.
/L3s
L3s are emerging as the next frontier in scaling Ethereum. At Syndicate, we've worked alongside dozens of teams to pursue that opportunity. Yet there are still many challenges.

We discuss the dual nature of today’s L3s in this essay:
