Happy Snowy Sunday! Drop some frosty stuff in the timeline.
Arthur Fellig (1899 – 1968) known by his pseudonym Weegee, is celebrated for his iconic images of New York City during the 1930s and 1940s. Born in 1899 in Lemburg (now in Ukraine), his family immigrated to the United States when he was just ten years old. He became a freelance news photographer in 1935, and over the next decade and a half, made a name for himself by capturing striking images of nocturnal New York, gaining access to crime scenes by bribing police officers, and later, by obtaining permission to install a police radio in his car. His gritty, tabloid-style photographs depicting the aftermath of street crimes, disasters, and tragedies, often using bright flash, are controversial and have been labelled voyeuristic by some, yet Weegee’s influence was undeniable. His focus on capturing the harsh realities of urban life is said to have inspired many notable photographers, including Diane Arbus.

/streetphotos has an official clanker/clankpad coin now, $STREETCOINS

The idea is to reward folks for participating here - @mcbain would love to chat further now this is live

I will not be purchasing any of it, as I’m taking a hiatus from buying-trading, but I’m motivated to get back into my photo practice and encourage others to do so as well

When DEGEN tipping was at its height, I gave the equivalent of what would now be worth 10s of thousands of USD away to folks who were contributing here, and I’d like to bring back some incentives in that vein once again

I didn’t know Martha Cooper had a documentary made about her, but it’s great and you should see it if you care about street art, hip hop or street photography. Got to see her do a Q&A last night and she’s such a badass.

‘As Strangers Pass Us By…’ on @rodeodotclub
“I feel it is the heart, not the eye, that should determine the content of the photograph. What the eye sees is its own. What the heart can perceive is a very different matter.”

Although he photographed across a range of styles and subjects throughout his illustrious career, Gordon Parks (1912-2006) is best remembered for his insightful photo essays during his tenure as the first Black-American staff photographer for LIFE magazine from 1948 to 1972. The penetrating imagery he captured in cities like Chicago and New York City, captured the often harsh realities of everyday life for African Americans whilst challenging pervasive stereotypes, and resonated with audiences, often sparking positive change for the people photographed.

Mary Ellen Mark
“Photograph the world as it is.”

Driven by a deep sense of humanism, American photographer Mary Ellen Mark (1940-2015) dedicated much of her remarkable five-decade career to capturing individuals on the fringes of society with unwavering honesty, acuity, and compassion. While celebrated for her storytelling, Mark always considered herself primarily a street photographer and possessed the same innate perceptivity as the genre’s most iconic figures. Before photographing her subjects, she would spend time with them, treating them with warmth, honesty, and respect, thus fostering a profound sense of intimacy in her work, and evoking empathy and connection in the viewer.

The origins for street photography date back to the 1850s. The genre saw two booms in the late 1900s and in 2010s.

The practice offers significant personal development benefits, including building confidence, improving conflict management skills, and enhancing mental health through mindful observation.

For beginners, using aperture priority mode is recommended over manual settings. That’s because it allows photographers to quickly capture moments without missing shots due to exposure adjustments.

Street photography may seem simple, but there is actually a lot to it and the initial learning curve can take some time.
The first step is to push through the fear, to improve your hand-eye coordination, and to get the general tips down both technically and in how you carry yourself. The next step is to figure out what makes an interesting photograph and to develop your voice.

But the most important aspect through all of this is to have fun and to try to practice frequently, even if it is in short spurts or with a camera phone – this is what will take you to the next level.

Ernst Haas (born 1929) was an Austrian-American photojournalist and the early master of color photography.
Using color also for his personal work, with a pictorial language recalling at times the works by painter Edward Hopper, Haas has been described as a poet photographer. Haas cropped and abstracted, photographed against the light and out of focus, and used reflections and close-ups to mystify the visible.
His innovative use of shutter speed added a blurred effect to his images, creating a unique sense of movement. Haas’s simple photos of lines on the street and reflections completely opened up view of photography. To see that mundane things like this could be considered interesting powerfully struck everyone.
