Local FB Marketplace has been good recently. Picked up a drill press this week on the cheap. Just being able to make consistently straight holes feels like a huge unlock for the jigs Iโ€™ve been making, but thinking maybe I can get this thing cutting rough miters in thin steel tubes too! First some cleaning ๐Ÿงผ

always a work in progress
Frame building update: Iโ€™ve planned all along to flip this down tube with the taper facing out, but now itโ€™s go time and Iโ€™m wrestling with it. Itโ€™s really meant to face the other direction, with the pointy side up, based on the principles of aerodynamics I guess, but I think it gives a nicer finish at the BB upside down and makes bottle bosses easier to mount on a wider, flatter edge. I canโ€™t imagine it makes much difference in terms of stiffness on oversized tube like this, but will it look weird? ๐Ÿค” What do you think?

Bike frame update: Finally found a solid way to scribe a good, round reference line for this aero down tube to bottom bracket junction. Roughed in a cut with a hack saw and filed a bit but wanted a better reference line for filing before I went further. My original cut paper method was too flexy.

Refined my DT fixture for a more secure, reliable center position and a bent piece of sharp bronze brazing rod etches into marker well enough on steel.

More filing scheduled for this weekend!

Struck me that a few taped magnets would be an excellent way to attach this power strip to my standing desk. My cord didnโ€™t quite reach the floor before. Even holds a laptop charger!

Adding more magnets to my list for the next hardware store visit.

I hate this thing but damn itโ€™s convenient for getting some suffering in while things are in the dryer. Fenders for shielding burning rubber from these soft tires and rack for speed โšก๏ธ

Hey @bracky, what's the market like? ๐Ÿ€
@bracky howโ€™s the market looking?
Anybody have a Bracky connection? I want in!
Picked up a new tool this weekend. Pretty amazing little device.

After zeroing to a known level surface, I can attach it to a vertically clamped tube via the magnetized side that has a nice indent for squaring against tubes. Spin it around the tube, and center to 90deg on a few sides, secure the vice clamp. Then Iโ€™m set to measure mitred joints

Beats just eyeballing it and using T squares, which Iโ€™ll still be doing. Also digging the color ๐Ÿฅ•

Big shakeout gravel ride before East Texas Showdown. Wildflower season in full effect.

Bike felt supreme. Letโ€™s goo!
The bikepacking rig upgrades continue: added some additional bottle mounts to my minimal front rack.

Swapped a set of cages from another bike that nicely aligns a cutout for bolt access on the rack. Feels like good practice to keep things accessible for tightening.

Im looking forward to a longer gravel shakeout ride tomorrow.

First real ride back on the big rig went well yesterday. Iโ€™ve got a good list of maintenance items ahead of me to get the bike ready for East Texas Showdown.

1. Bigger front chainring, and a longer chain to match, for relatively less climbing than my last trip.

2. Brake cleaning and possibly new pads. Cooked โ€˜em good on the fully loaded downhills the last time out. Feeling loooose!

3. Rack adjustments and fastener check. Make sure theyโ€™re on there real good.

Shakeout for the shakeout on the bikepacking rig. Good reason to explore some lesser traveled local trails while I thought about my maintenance todo list to get ready for a trip next week.

Big Saturday on the bike fueled by gas station junk food. 50mi to about 100k is a bit of a barrier for me. Things seem to unravel around there but learning to eat more and stay relaxed. Working up to a big gravel bikepacking trip at the end of March. Nice to have a target to train towards.

40mi out and back to the highest local point I could think of. Short gravel section at the midpoint was a nice treat

Just about perfect bike weather with a vest but I misjudged the wind a bit for the way back (as usual). Iโ€™ll have to take more to eat next weekend. Stopping for a coffee and kolache early on the way out was not enough.

First contactโ€”melting bronze at home. Struggling with getting enough heat into the piece, but it kinda works. I think I need to go hotter with the flame generally, bigger on the flame, direct the flame down into the piece, and hold it a bit further back. Iโ€™m realizing that this may be a particularly tricky joint to heat because of all the surface contact between the pieces, but hoping I can save it with another pass.

Seemed like how things attached to the table played a pretty big role in heat distribution
