“Nooo!” Danny pushed off of his desk and squeezed his fists in the air.
The flat-toned voice of his second-best friend (and secret crush) came over the headphones. “You fell off a cliff and cracked your head open. You’re down to three hearts.”
“Can you teleport me back to you?” Danny bounced his leg and respawned. MagicVille was more than a game to him and Ramona. It was real life.
“No, sorry. I have to get off for dinner. Bye Danny X.”
He was glad she couldn’t see him blush when she used his gamertag. So he did the same. “See you tomorrow, Mona May.”

I was also told to start singing and acting crazy as a deterrent. It’s just so difficult to imagine doing that because we have to work so hard to be respected in society and are constantly encouraged to suppress our emotions and mental distress, so flipping a switch to pretend to be crazy just feels like defeat.
I like having those other options (the mother and disease threat) as the first line of defense because they seem more powerful somehow.

One time, during college, I was walking back to my apartment at night. As I made my way down the sidewalk along a thoroughfare, a car of drunk guys pulled over in front of me. In my panic, my addled mind told me to do something strange to scare them. And so I sank my chin deep into my neck and crossed my eyes and reached out toward them with a shit eating grin. It worked. But I was lucky. The moral of these tales is never underestimate the value of surprise
