Fred the Frog Rings the Bell 1990
Wood and steel
Fred the Frog was an alter-ego of Kippenberger's. Between 1988-92 he made a number of paintings and sculptures based on the character, including this work. With its beer jug and juvenile expression, Kippenberger intended this to be crude and provocative, deliberately leaving both himself and his creation Fred the Frog open to criticism. However, because the frog serves as a metaphor for the artist, Kippenberger in effect crucified himself before he could be crucified by his critics.

The mesh painting process grew out of playful attempts to manually replicate the offset lithography printing process used to print billboard posters (before they all went digital). Sometimes collected the discarded fragments of posters and used these fragments to create collages.

I experimented with digital tools to replicate my physical acrylic mesh painting process. I made the perforated mesh in Blender 3d & pushed virtual paint though the holes in VR - see more about mesh painting process here - https://chrisfollows.com/process.html
Been updating my website, long overdue and AI assisted html of course https://chrisfollows.com

A dynamic image, where colors and lines dance, creating a captivating and surreal portrait.
Art a journey or destination?
I still have nightmares about trying to make the career transition from chef to artist. Giving up a job, career you know is secure, reliable & will pay the bills is not easy & very stressful - I see this a lot in web3 art community
