Swiss Photomonth

This autumn, the Swiss art scene will live to the rhythm of the Swiss Photomonth. The first edition of this Festival (30 August – 6 October 2024) will serve as a catalyst for the country’s abundant cultural offerings, and provide the public the chance to explore no fewer than sixty artistic spaces, ranging from world-renowned institutions to emerging venues. It is a unique opportunity to (re)discover the leading figures in photography, as well as the Swiss and international talents of tomorrow.

Approximation and Palpitation

through a vague shape, with a somnambulant sigh :: part of [Circling Fragmentations] for alterHEN :: {2017;2021} :: paper collage, GIMP selection tool :: @annaxmalina :: annamalina.com ------------- CIRCLING FRAGMENTATIONS Tracing the soft edges of paper tears with fingertips. Drawing up the shapes, the lines, the details of a material, a memory, in the dark room of inner vision. Trying to hold together the fragments of a being, of a body, of a self through a vague shape, with a somnambulant sigh; the eye hovering on images like a hand lingering just above the skin of an other. Through varying approaches – found footage (the memories of others) and self-portraiture (the dissection of a person) – I try to sculpt layers of time, space & material into moments, trapping them into the relentless repetition of a gif, ad nauseam, weighing heavy on the eye. Moments made up from shards of experiences and manipulated paper scraps are glued together, frame by frame, in an improbable media format. Unlike a fixed slice of time, a still image, gifs fill up an interval of time. These tiny moments are experienced in their process, evading a completive experience in one single instant. They are always the same, and yet, each iteration is experienced as a slight variation on the loop before, with different details occupying the viewer’s gaze. Infinitely circling, they never amount to a narrative resolution. Infinitely circling, they fall out of time.

by Anna Block Could you please (England, 2014)­ I came up to strangers in the street asking them to take a picture of me with my camera. I asked them to stage it, to tell me where to stand, and what to do. I also asked them to place their hand in the frame. I gave them total control. At that time it was already two years since I’d left home. I lived in England doing my MA and getting what’s called “life experience”. I put lots of effort into building bonds with places and people around me, yet, no matter how hard I tried, in the end I was only a distant observer, a foreigner. The world seemed to be just a screen and I was desperate to tear it, to get through, and get a real physical connection with what was beyond. This performative act became a playful way to do it. Placing myself in a position of an object I questioned the common artist-vs-model dichotomy and explored issues of vulnerability and control – this photographic process tested not only myself but also limits and desires of others. It was a game. Solitude, my body, and will of unknown people were the players. Each of us won.
