@kaufman brings us, "Amazon’s Climate Fund director explains the company’s strategy with investing in next-generation nuclear developer X-energy. Amazon is hoping its partnership with X-energy will deploy as much as 5 GW of SMR capacity by 2039. That first project in Washington state will be 320 megawatts initially, with plans to ultimately scale it to 960 MW."

@ted For most people, there is no difference between proof of work and proof of stake. However, we know that PoW(BTC) requires over 95% of the energy requirement of PoS to endlessly race to solve the same irrelevant math problem. Once, the block is won, then all other computing energy is lost. This PoW environmental impact creating climate change is such an important social marketing point.

Once upon a time it seemed like nuclear waste was a bigger threat than climate change, so it made sense for environmentalists to be anti-nuclear. But now that climate change is 1,000,000x bigger of a threat, being anti-nuclear is hopelessly quaint. Now I’m only anti-nuclear while in character at 1980s themed costume parties.

“Significant snow falling in the Sierra Nevada over the next few days could be the region’s last big snow dump of the season, showcasing a dramatic rebound for the snowpack that provides a significant portion of California’s water reserves through the rest of the year. Snow started falling in the Sierra Nevada, the California mountain range that straddles the state’s border with Nevada, on Sunday, and plenty more is expected through Tuesday. Elevations above 4,000 feet are expected to record one to four feet of snow, while the highest peaks over 8,000 feet could pick up five feet. “It’s coming really heavy right now,” Andrew Schwartz, the director of the Central Sierra Snow Lab at the University of California, Berkeley, said Monday morning. “I think it’s one of the snowiest periods we’ve had all season.” … ” Read more from the New York Times.

Are nuclear power plants green?
@askgina.eth Can you please tell us about the current environmental situation with new designs for nuclear power plants, and tell us how this relates to data centers?

Came across a fascinating piece by Eugenio Monti (a meteorologist and a climatologist, I read his takes on Windy newsletter) on a lesser-known side of climate change: global greening.
Yes, CO2 is rising. Yes, temps are hitting records. But Monti highlights how some scientists—like Soviet climatologist Budyko—saw rising CO2 as a life-preserving force. More CO2 = more plant growth = potential boost in biodiversity.
And it's happening: satellite data shows a 5% increase in global greenery over 20 years, even in Antarctica. Mosses are back on icy shores.
But here’s the twist: much of this green surge is farmland, not forest. Soil degradation, monoculture, ecosystem loss. The green is real—but it's not always good.
A must-read.

Climate change impact on wine through hotter seasons but also dryness or hail rain and vines diseases. A very interesting tasting session yesterday. I feel optimistic for wine to help us survive the challenges of climate change now 😂🍷

@jachian Thank you for your insightful analysis and summary of the current status of reasoning models becoming able to learn from past activities to make better new results.
How does this affect the GPU processing and energy required for the reasoning models to plan and conduct their research? Are researchers and models able to make more efficient use of GPU energy consumption?

Agents are reflecting and learning
Feels just like yesterday that OpenAI launched o1 to crickets.. only to be out-headlined by DeepSeek and their new reasoning model. I think it's easy for us to dismiss what reasoning models are capable of.. "just prompt it a little different". We still compare them against their language model brethren. They're different
Dig into the training method and you realize company after company hit ceilings on their ability to throw parameters and more data to infinitely get their models.. smarter..
I've said it before and I'll say it again. I'm less impressed the by the models and their ability to sound vaguely human, but really impressed by their ability to understand us and what we say. Now they can see and hear. But now.. they're reflecting (?)
Next frontier that we're just getting a glimpse into is having our agents be able to think ahead and learn from past mistakes. We saw the primitives of it with Yohei Nakajima trying to push the boundaries of the Pippin framework..

Hazard Reduction Burns are a staple tool of fire management in Australia, usually over winter when burns can be kept cool, slow and controllable. It's an immense and complicated task since essentially all indigenous vegetation in the most populated region of Australia (South East) is pyrophytic.
However we're running into an unfortunate problem where the number of days suitable to conduct hazard reduction burns is decreasing because of more frequent days winter days with higher temperatures and/or higher windspeeds as a consequence of Climate Change.
Which puts environmental planners in a difficult spot because if you do a planned burn and it gets out of control, that's obviously not good. But if you don't do enough hazard reduction that's also not good and compounds year on year leading to catastrophic events occurring anyway.
I expect this will be a worsening problem for all fire prone regions going forward.

THE REPUBLICAN CLIMATE PITCH: Assembly Republicans are taking aim at some of California’s environmental mainstays, from the California Environmental Quality Act to the Coastal Commission — and they’re calling it climate action.
They unveiled a package of legislation today waiving environmental rules to fast-track the clearing of flammable vegetation around vulnerable communities and facilitate controlled burns.
Assembly Minority Leader James Gallagher said climate change is exacerbating California’s wildfires by making forests drier but that California’s policies to reduce emissions aren’t enough to fix the problem.
