We’re here to discuss the climate emergency: Solutions > Problems. Building > Politics. Systemic change > Lifestyle change. Emotional processing welcome. No climate denial allowed. Request membership: DM something you've posted about climate.
I can envision a year 2050 where the AMOC collapses and plunges the northern hemisphere into frigid iciness, and idiots will point to that and say "AHA! I knew global warming was a scam!"

We do it with electronic components, fast fashion, even dating. Either we produce less or the planet goes in misery.
What key signals are folks tracking to see
- energy transition
- new tech maturity
- climate adaptation

Human priorities
My heart breaks for these less developed countries and island nations. They don't have much, and are at risk of being wiped out by the consequences of wealthier countries' actions.

I've built a thing — a dashboard which shows the amount of climate change expected at airports in the 21st century according to the latest generation of climate models. It allows you to pick any of the world's ~900 largest airports, choose one of four climate scenarios from most to least optimistic, and see how much change is predicted to happen in the air temperature, pressure, and humidity at that location up to the year 2100. This work is a derivative of my doctoral research.

This image really shows the degree to which we've practically sealed off the surface of the earth in dense urban areas.
One of the leading causes of urban vulnerability to climate change. No where for the water to permeate in a storm -> so it floods much more readily. Dramatically reduced vegetation replaced with hard, solid, often dark surfaces -> urban heat island effect.
Not to mention the impact to biodiversity. Cities are often historical hotspots for biodiversity because of the intersection of useful ecosystem resources (i.e river + sea + wetland). The same reason we setup shop there in the first place.

So much chaos in the world and most of it is distracting us from the greatest issue we've ever known. Gen Z and Gen Alpha are going to have a tough ride later in life...sigh

I'm boosted! Thanks everyone, so allow me, for once, to shill a project (and no you can't buy now, I just wanted to tell you about it)

This is my friends project on Starknet. They are working very hard to have a great protocol to allow us to fund carbon sequestration projects all over the globe. Already 4 funded.
So if you are curious about how we can do RWA differently and not only tokenize, head on their discord and the team and myself will be very happy to answer all your questions.
Have a great day on FC!

I don't know if we realise, but I've been traveling almost 10000km today (a third of the earth perimeter) and I arrived only 15min late. Maybe humankind could stand a bit less precision and progress if it meant improved chances to have a liveable planet...
🌐 Moving carbon credits onchain. ⛓️
The last couple years have been tough for both crypto and carbon credits, but that hasn’t dissuaded Marcus Levine from continuing his mission to transform climate finance using blockchains.
Learn more about what’s driving his thesis and the work at KlimaDAO, one of the original protocols that catalyzed #refi.

A powerful editorial by George Monbiot of the Guardian.
I often try to see the world’s actions through the lens of an alien race observing us from outside, which is a similar thought experiment to the article’s.
That lens helps surface all our contradictions, hypocrisy, idiosyncrasies, tribalism, and collective inability to fight the greatest Moloch of all times

we need low-energy rich countries
The 2015 Paris Agreement had two goals regarding the global average temperature increase above its pre-industrial (1850–1900) level.
The first was to set a hard cap to well below 2°C.
The second was to try and limit it to 1.5°C".
We've now fully blown past the latter, which is something that climate scientists intuited for years and is now substantiated by Copernicus data (https://climate.copernicus.eu/surface-air-temperature-october-2024).
October was 1.65°C above the pre-industrial level and was the 15th month in a 16-month period for which the atmosphere exceeded the Paris goal of 1.5°C.
As to the first goal, it's still work in progress, but it looks like the future got decided in no small part yesterday.

It's that time of year again in California where 80 mph winds and bone dry vegetation cause a cascading 10,000+ acre fire that wipes out entire neighborhoods

TIL Rick Perry, a republican, had a big part in making Texas the leader in wind power.
“You can be proud that Texas produces more energy from wind turbines than all but five countries”

A few things about this take:
- Getting countries around the world to keep the promises *they already made* to keep warming below 2C via emissions reductions is not socialism
- Aerosolized sulfates may be needed eventually, but it likely won't solve the problem on its own and will need to be in conjunction with emissions reductions. It also will absolutely have second order effects that need to be studied *before* enacting this idea
- Carter is supporting a president who thinks climate change is a hoax, so why would he consider *any* solution including aerosolized sulfates?
