I know this isn’t the first non-language learning course for Duolingo, but it seems like it’s the most important non-language course they have launched and will be an indicator for future direction. https://www.theverge.com/news/649319/duolingo-chess-course-ios-test
I’m sure my chess dudes would understand

The women’s world chess championship finished today, earlier than expected because Ju Wenjun absolutely smashed it to retain the title for the 5th time in a row

She went behind in game 2 with an excellent game from Tan, but then came back without losing a single game for the rest of the match

I wanted Tan to win. She won the title in 2018 but could not defend it against Ju the next year. This is the first time since then that Tan has been able to get through the candidates to be the contender

But Ju was really just too good. Slight inaccuracies by Tan were ruthlessly capitalised on. She’s on course to be one of the most successful female players ever 👍👍👍

I’ve gotta charge up me brains 🧠
I don’t know if it’s the new Gen or them Old dudes that compare Fischer with Magnus
Magnus is above Fischer and that should be common knowledge.
They just hype Fischer because well he was the first born American to win the world championship and it was a massive win against the Soviet union

Special Move #2 in Chess: Passant
The second special move you should know is known as “en passant” En passant is a French term and it means “in passing”. If a pawn moves two squares and passes over a square where another pawn could capture it, then you may in fact capture that pawn as if it moved only one square.

Who will learn chess with me?

Special move 1 in Chess: Promotion
If a pawn reaches the last rank on the other side of the board, then that pawn may promote to one of the big pieces. He can choose to become any piece except a king. You should also take note that you are allowed to have more than 1 queen. Every time a pawn reaches the other side of the board, then that pawn may become a queen, even if your other queen is still in the game.

Calculation in playing Chess
Calculation refers to your ability to calculate the consequences of your opponent’s move, as well as the consequences of your intended move.

A well-developed calculation skill can have a big positive impact on your confidence. It is humanly impossible to calculate all the moves in every position – you will quickly become fatigued and start making blunders due to oversights. This means you need an effective and efficient method to help you calculate the right moves.
/Chess
Visualization in Chess
Visualization is the ability to see in your mind the positions reached when certain moves are made – without making them on the board – and seeing them so clearly you can accurately consider the implications of each new position. Imagine how it must be to visualize any combination of moves in your mind and being able to “see” the outcome of it.

The skill to visualize moves long before they actually appear on the board gives you a serious advantage over any opponent who can’t do it.

Fun fact. The Bishop in chess is only called that in places where the Church had historical influence. Most of the world uses a variety of terms to describe the piece. From the "slon" (elephant) in Russian and "gajah" in Indonesian, reflecting ancient Arabic influences, to the "Läufer" (runner) in German and "loper" in Dutch, highlighting its diagonal movement, its name varies wildly. The French "fou" (fool) adds a whimsical twist, while "ofitser" (officer) in Bulgarian and "axiomatikós" in Greek suggest a more structured role.
one month later, 1800 ELO, damn that was hard....till it wasn't

I have a 450 day stream on chess.com 😀 yet my skills haven't really taken off. That's primarily because of the switch to play 1 minute bullet games - they are more about fast taps than strategy.

My end game typically suffers a lot because of this . but am addicted I guess so no going back..
My first chess lesson in 2 years, trying to kill this 1700 plateau. We focused on smart middlegame plans and about being distracted less. It's stuff I 'know' but am not implementing properly. Can't wait to put it into practice!
The space with Magnus Carlsen and @anichessgame was pushed back, but is beginning now!
