interestingly, institutions and bureaucracies are the best way to group sense-make now. Not sure if they'll hold up without some kind of refactor in the future, but the breaking them down is also going to a have an affect on how we understand ourselves and relate to each other.
Rules are a collective sensemaking mechanism.

This is what it's like to experience Whitehead's theory of advancement unfolding in realtime.
Just an intuition, but I think this is much more than just increased dopamine and viral loads, might just be a pre-condition for increased coordination ability.
If we're relying on technology to "think for us," maybe our individual cognitive abilities are declining from lack of exercise. But what if this means our collective capabilities are advancing in the long run?

I love how presenting the two extreme tails in future scenarios get people thinking about the more nuanced middle pathways. Feels like an inherently human trait to reject absolutes that needs to be leveraged more

When people tell me something is going end up as one extreme or the other, I usually conclude that we’re likely to end up with a distribution around the middle

I'm a strong believer that history repeats itself, but with new tools each cycle. Lots to bridge between the governance systems of the hanseatic league and all the little pieces of a new computer<>economy we're all trying to build over here:

Seems like half the internet is going to be straight markdown, exposed semantic metadata & standardized APIs optimized specifically for agent eyes. And the other half beautifully-designed interfaces, made with intention, purely for weird and delightful human experiences.
if we can get even half as much of this in general politics WAGMI

This is still the wildest/amazing thing about crypto to me and probably why it's so hard to pinpoint a single mental model: it's the only space I've been in where the word means so many different things to both insiders and outsiders. So many clearly defined factions under 1 umbrella

He's too humble to do a real intro, but that's what friends are for ;) Miroweart's storyboarded and animated for A24, Kendrick Lamar, Nike, FKA twigs among other cool projects. It's his first time interfacing with crypto so hope we can give him a warm welcome here!
Hit him up if you ever need storyboarding/animation/marketing help :)

I've been working with a group of farmers and web2 technologists building Open AgTech since the summer and we managed to sneak in some protocol-coded research today for an upcoming paper 🤭

Government as marketplace
I recently learned that the movie Perfect Days started off a commissioned commercial for the Tokyo Toilet Project. The quality of a public toilets is a great proxy for the efficiency of a city government/services.

I think substack is the social media feed I've been missing between here, twitter and bsky. Still walled garden enough to feel relevant and cozy, but also great built-in discovery. I wonder if it's bc it's still small or a result of adding shortform to longform (instead of current trend of longform added to shortform)
We put out an overview of PG in the broader realm of the future of work last year :)

Definitely appreciate how I dont get notifications for all the bot follows, but almost missed new folks like @theobtl because of it. I can see this making it hard for new farcaster users to join and engage.
Any way to do this more granularly? E.g. as a likely person, can I mark Theo as a person. Maybe once a threshold's met of likely human account to new account verifications they get taken off the backend likely-a-bot list?

Markets do uniquely address what Hayek calls "the knowledge problem" though - the challenge of coordinating millions of individual preferences, circumstances, and bits of local knowledge that no central planner or force could possibly process on their own.
Wondering if protocol economics/entrepreneurship could be a way to have your cake and eat it too. Markets mechanics without market failures.

Working through Polyani's The Great Transformation rn and it feels like relevant reading for our current day in-between times. Learning a lot more about how markets came to be - as externalities of the fiscal-military state, not as spontaneously as Hayek, Friedman and basically every economic class make them out to be.

What's everyone's favourite coworking spot in Brooklyn/Lower Manhattan?
Anyone up to get some sat/sun weekend runs in? Had a pretty consistent crew over the summer that tapered out. Thinking Williamsburg -> lower eastside/prospect park -> brunch wherever we land 😁
Fun fact: the founder of Project Euler got his start with one of these. Something also seems to click in a kid's brain when you can POKE/PEEK into memory and the insides of a computer in one of it's simpler forms.
Modern computers abstract away these interactions and essentially bury the core protocols that made the system transparent and accessible before. The doing process is faster but the learning process much less direct.

Healthy social production becomes economically viable when:
- The tools needed for production are widely available
- Tasks can be broken down into small chunks that many people can work on independently
- There are effective ways to combine everyone's small contributions

The Catholic church might have been the original network society. 177 million acres of land owned across the world (and 2nd largest landowner right after the british royal family). Async knowledge sharing as folks travelled from hub to hub on eduction, retreats, missions, monastery stays.
An argument that the future to come is not in fact "straight ahead" of us
"...Now, in the fifth long cycle of techno-capitalist time, with the rollout of fifth-generation cellular networks, these two kinds of waves, which occupy radically different frequencies, converge. It is within this fifth wave concurrence that China’s geopolitical rise has become increasingly intermeshed with the infrastructure of our wireless world."
