I planted a 4 inch pot of these African daisies in the ground last year and now it’s about 4 feet wide. 😲 I even chopped about a foot of it off that was hanging over the edge but it came back even more. I only water it occasionally in the summer dry spells. Zone 9b in California, very popular landscape plants here.
We named our sourdough starter Gemma. We perpetually take pieces of her to use, to discard, and to put back into her jar, only to be fed intermittently enough to keep her alive until the next time we need to rip her apart.
This made me think of the literal hike on Mount Diablo (in the SF Bay Area). It’s an all-day 15 mile hike, with 5 peaks to summit. At each peak we looked back at all the progress we made, and it was astonishing. (March 2017)

Really hard to see the shape of the mountain when you’re climbing it
Me on day 2 of committing to eat salad for lunch
We also celebrated taco Sunday

Is taco Sunday a thing?
I got tickets to see Alton Brown! I grew up watching him, still do, and it feels surreal to be able to attend this!

Alright my friends, how did I do? My first sourdough loaf ever. I’m not versed enough to see where I can do better. But the bread was delicious and fluffy!
It was raining when we went to Nara, so we didn’t get to visit the deer, but we were just there for the pizza, anyway. 🍕 (I also got devoured by mosquitoes, but worth.)
Did a better job browning the butter in this next attempt. Also let the chilled dough warm up a bit before baking. I think these are as good as it gets now. I found a recipe on King Arthur that uses sourdough discard so I might try that one soon, as I get my hands into bread making. 😬

I haven’t made cookies in a long time, but my partner has been asking for them. Cookies were the first thing I learned to cook/bake. I later took a cooking class in high school and wanted to go to culinary school to eventually become a pastry chef. My dad demanded I go into engineering, so I settled for computer science at UC Berkeley. He kicked me out anyway. Learning to cook instantly became a necessity rather than a passion. Eventually my life somewhat stabilized and cooking for fun came back, to an extent. It’s still a necessity, since eating out is expensive and unhealthy, and it takes a lot of mental lift to plan, prep, and cook, especially after long days in front of my computer. I often wonder how my life would have turned out if I pursued that passion from the start. I know it’s not too late, but I’m older and tired and just don’t have it in me to risk such a life change. Regardless, I have a deep appreciation for food, from hole in the walls to Michelin stars, from seed to plate.
Dinner tonight: Gà Kho (Vietnamese Caramelized Braised Chicken) with sautéed garlic spinach & arugula on rice 😋
There is this variegated leaf amongst my calla lilies - mutation or imposter? Can’t wait to see what it looks like when it blooms!

I have been awed by Dominique Crenn for a long time now. I had the pleasure of eating at Bar Crenn in 2018, but never got around to booking something at her flagship, until now for my birthday! I’m so excited. If I get to meet her I’m going to cry!
I can always count on garlic to bring me joy in my garden through the winter 🧄 I’m growing most of the same varieties I did last year but swapped out one hardneck for another soft neck. Inchelium Red (S), Lorz Italian (S), Vietnamese Red (H), Asian Tempest (H), and Metechi (H).
✨unboxing✨
Watch me fumble in my gardening gloves because my hands are dry and fucked up from the winter. Beauty tips accepted 💁🏻♀️

So we ate them and they were pretty hot! Similar flavor profile as Serrano. Based on how they looked and combing through the website I bought them from, I believe they are the Peter Pepper. 🤣

I bought California Peach Reaper starts that are finally ripening now that winter is coming, but they don’t look like Reapers to me! More like fat Shishitos.
Thank you for the beautiful candle and pottery @samantha @marjorie 🧡 Can’t wait to burn through this one and put a cute lil plant in!

If you’re still on Animal Crossing Pocket Camp, there is a free memorial tree to claim through the my Nintendo rewards site. Reminiscent of New Leaf 🥲
Midnight romas are so pretty (and tasty). My tomato plants are still going and I don’t have the heart to rip them out to make room for my garlic. 🥲 temps are dipping down to 40 though so it might just be time.
Slow roasted ribs with pasta salad - one of my favorite ways to use cherry tomatoes from my garden

Sweet potato harvest 🍠 from my 15gal grow bag. Soil was slightly compacted so I’ll add in vermiculite for next year. I think I’ll do Murasaki again and also Okinawa purples too
The sun will still shine another day (for now)
