marketing

All things marketing, creative content, user acquisition, GTM

Early crypto teams often ask us: how do we get marketing off the ground? Here’s how I think about agencies vs in-house.

Start by hiring in-house.
You need a marketing lead (not necessarily a CMO — think jack of all trades) who can set strategy, connect internal stakeholders, and tie everything back to business goals.
Look for someone who is:
• senior enough to lead
• scrappy enough to execute
• fluent in web3 culture and web2 best practices

Be clear on what you need: brand and growth are different skill sets.
This person will be hard to find. It can take 4–6 months. Don’t wait for applicants. Go after people you admire. Tap your investors for suggestions.

Use freelancers and agencies to execute.
Your marketing lead should manage them. Start with a single project to test for fit.
Big mistake: hiring an agency and expecting them to “own marketing.” They won’t.
Agencies give back what you put in.

An interim CMO = solid bridge
Sometimes it’s a temp fix. Sometimes they become permanent.

It’s an interesting signal that most web3 projects avoid Instagram and TikTok as a marketing channel because they believe their product is too niche and they don’t know how to be visually creative with their brand.

Tells me there’s a messaging problem, a design problem, and a perception problem that they need to talk to the people who already “get it”.

Here's an underrated upside of using AI daily:

1. You recognize what's AI-generated and what's not.

2. The content you once thought was great is not inspiring anymore.

3. I can even tell if it's a scheduled post written a few days ago.

4. Even comments by those "once-inspiring" accounts are AI-generated.

5. Everything is so repetitive (still getting wild reach).

People need to:
> Train their AI
> Make new content or
> At least use a different tone

Use AI as your helper only to keep inspiring small accounts.

Biggest content marketing mistake:

Creating content YOU want to make, not what USERS need.

How you can FIX this:

🟣 Map exact pain points in the user journey
🟣 Create content that solves those specific problems
🟣 Distribute where those users already are
A unique, valuable and quality product does not need marketing. In this case, the product markets itself. You just need to give it a little push at the beginning, following a proper strategy.

Community building isn't about giveaways or Discord members.

It's about designing SYSTEMS where members develop genuine shared identity.

The best communities are carefully engineered environments where each interaction strengthens belonging and adds compounding value.

Don't write like you're delivering a TED talk.

Write like you're texting your smartest friend at 2am with a random insight.

The best content feels like a conversation, not a lecture.

Don't be a podium guy.
hoomans who work from home, how do you socialize?

I haven’t made a single friend after school. I rarely go out, and even when I do, I mind my own business and everyone is on the phone so I don’t feel like talking to them anyway.

any tips 😅

Do product hunt launches still meaningfully move the needle for consumer apps?
Sigh. Bitcoin’s jump after Trump paused tariffs is a reminder: crypto markets are still wildly reactive to macro drama.

If you’re building here, comms isn’t optional. You need a narrative that can hold in volatility.
Its quite annoying how the KOLs charging THOUSANDS of dollars still expects to be SPOONFED with all the content.

Like bro, learn to research & write.
Its literally your job.

How do you guys deal with such KOLs?
Why your crypto content is failing:

🟣 Writing for your manager, not users
🟣 Obsession with sounding "professional"
🟣 Create perfect content instead of helpful content

Nobody wants to decode a technical manifesto just to understand what problem you're solving.

Community building for Web3 isn't about Discord members or token holders.

It's about creating SYSTEMS where people develop shared identity and purpose.

Design an ecosystems where each member has clear paths to contribute value and receive value.
Best marketing? you don’t see it coming. you just vibe with it and then realize you’re already in the funnel.

An ambassador program isn't just nice-to-have, it's your project's secret growth engine.

The right ambassadors don't just spread the word.

They build micro-communities, provide feedback loops, and create organic growth you can't buy.

If you don't have one, start one.
Despite the fact that I’m rediscovering this lesson in a sad context of everyday (unconscious?) sexism, I’m allowing myself to draw out the “positive” marketing insight.

There’s the need people express in a survey and then there’s the reality of consumer behavior.

Focus groups that put potential targets in « IRL » situations are more effective than polls…

There you go.

Yeah…I think the community votes are pretty telling.

This is a lesson in stated vs revealed prefs.
Founders and investors are not immune to FOMO and trend chasing.

Chasing trends is what the overwhelming majority do. They see a project killing it. Then, they copy (riff) + paste.

However, this strategy generally flops. When you are not innovating on product, you must win distribution or economics.

Economics is a race to the bottom and generally follows the innovation cycle.

1st (early), product
2nd (mid), distribution
Last (late), economics

Distribution is where winners play. This is why you hire professional marketers.
🚀 Ever wondered why those limited-edition sneakers sell out in minutes? Or why does a "last chance" discount make you hit 'buy' faster than you can say "impulse purchase"? I wrote a short piece about the scarcity principle: https://paragraph.com/@mariokondo/scarcity-principle

🧠 FOMO. That's the engine driving scarcity. We panic when something's about to vanish, and that panic opens wallets. Plus, if it's hard to get, we assume it's valuable. It's as simple as that.

🛍️ But play it wrong, and you'll get burned. Fake scarcity? Customers will see through it. And no amount of hype can save a bad product. Scarcity amplifies it, doesn't create magic.

Do we have any crypto growth marketing people in this channel looking for their next role?
Here's a fun fact I doubt many people here know. The Leprechaun was the first movie character to open the New York stock exchange. Unsurprisingly, they had no problem letting a ghoulish character from a horror film ring the bell and stage a protest outside to return to the gold standard.

I've been thinking about sharing a few creative marketing stories like this, but not sure if there's enough interest around here.
Will see how this cast does and let the people decide.
Started in Q4 2024, and at the end of Q1 2025, we're here!

- Read a lot, listened a lot, and wrote A LOT
- Used new dapps, explored new ecosystems
- Earned 60 yaps on @kaitoai
- Met many people IRL, made friends
- Attended ETHDenver and discovered @crecimientoar
- Hosted Spaces and produced content for @uniswap and @starknet
- Actively participated in the communities on X

I can say it's one hell of a consistency.

Another way to use Quora for SEO is for surfacing content topic ideas.

What I love about this idea is you can use it for brainstorming new content or improving existing content. For example, if you see lots of questions related to replacing the toilet seat as a renter, you could draft a new piece of content or address that question in existing content.

Of course, you should verify and use ideas that relate to your business and its target audience.
Build authority on Quora for your SEO

Quora is a social media platform built on people asking and answering questions.

Becoming an active community member can help you build your online authority by answering questions related to your industry. For example, if you are improving SEO for recreation businesses like campgrounds, you could use Quora to find campers, families, and adventure seekers looking for camping advice.

While you won’t generate leads from this practice, you will build authority online.

Is Reddit Right for Your Business?
Reddit is right for your business if you can answer “yes” to all of the questions below.

Ask yourself:

Can you assign a dedicated person and resources to engage with multiple subreddits consistently?
Are you comfortable investing without immediate ROI and unclear initial performance metrics?
Are you prepared to be transparent and honest in your subreddit interactions?
Are you able to handle criticism and negativity directed at your brand?
Are you okay with a long-term marketing strategy instead of something you can quickly target for significant SEO results?
The problem with Web3 marketing: you’re either a scam or you’re boring. There’s no in-between
4. Reddit's Unpredictable Ranking Algorithm: Reddit’s algorithm is volatile and unpredictable because it’s based on voting. This often results in even popular content being buried by new posts.
5. Reddit's Backlinks are No Follow: Regarding link building efforts, it’s worth noting that Reddit links are nofollow, so they will not pass on any link equity to your website. This doesn’t mean that links from Reddit pointing to your website won’t be beneficial since they can still drive traffic, but they won’t help build your domain authority.
Although there are many benefits to Reddit SEO, there are also some disadvantages that are worth considering. Some of these drawbacks include:

1. Strict Community Guidelines: Reddit enforces a zero-tolerance policy for spam and self-promotion, which can easily lead to your posts being removed or — in severe cases — even getting your account banned.
2. Redditors are Known for their Blunt Honesty: Any inconsistencies or marketing missteps can severely damage your brand’s reputation if not dealt with appropriately.
3. Time and Labor Intensive: Building a strong Reddit presence demands consistent engagement, which is time-consuming and offers no guaranteed returns.

More advantages of using Reddit as part of your SEO strategy:
Reach Your Target Audience: Reddit allows you to target a specific audience or niche, which can help ensure your content and ads reach the right people and perform well.
Analytics to Track Performance: Reddit has built-in analytics with the Reddit Ads API that can help you understand how your ads are performing.
Improve Engagement With Customers: Reddit can be a great way to improve your brand’s relationship with customers if they are asking questions or you are interacting with them through “ask me anything” posts (AMAs).
Below are some of the main advantages of using Reddit as part of your SEO strategy:

Easy to Get Started: Reddit is free and easy to use — plus creating a Reddit account is quick and simple.
Own More SERP Real Estate: Google and other search engines display Reddit results on the SERPs, so it adds another way for your company to show up on Google’s SERPs besides your company website.
User-Generated Content: Google has started to prioritize showing user-generated content, so this is a great opportunity to get people to talk about your brand.
